Carolina Crashing

When the playoffs opened, the Carolina Hurricanes were +650 chalk on BetMGM's Stanley Cup odds board. Carolina (52-23-2-5) finished the regular season with 111 points, behind only the Islanders (114) and Stars (113).

After a 4-1 first-round series win over the New York Islanders, the 'Canes moved to +450 co-favorites to lift the chalice. But since then, Carolina has dug itself into a 3-0 hole against the New York Rangers.

As such, New York – which had the best regular-season record in the NHL – is now the +310 favorite to win the title. On the flip side, Carolina plunged to +3500, last among the eight remaining teams.

"Carolina's collapse is one of the worst-case scenarios for us," BetMGM trader Christian Cipollini said. "We wanted that series to go more games and wanted the Rangers to at least have a challenge."

The Hurricanes entered the postseason as the hottest team in the league, going 16-4-0-1 over their final 21 regular-season games.

Liability Leaders

In digital betting (mobile/online), Carolina, Colorado and the New York Rangers are the largest liabilities for BetMGM in odds to win the Stanley Cup. Albeit not in the exact same order. The Rangers are the liability leader, with the Avalanche No. 2 and the Hurricanes No. 3.

However, when factoring in retail betting, the Avalanche aren't as much of a factor. Further, BetMGM would take a Carolina title, though that's looking much less likely.

"The Rangers and Oilers are our only problems left. So it's not great that they are two of the favorites," Cipollini said. "We're rooting for anyone else."

As noted above, New York is now +300 chalk on BetMGM's Stanley Cup odds board. Edmonton is the +400 third choice, followed by the Dallas Stars (+550).

Flying Under the Radar

The Florida Panthers (52-24-4-2) racked up 110 points in the regular season. That was good for third in the East and tied for fourth in the entire league. In so doing, the Panthers surged all the way to No. 2 in BetMGM's Stanley Cup futures odds market.

Now, with eight teams remaining, Florida is still at No. 2, with +320 odds to win the Stanley Cup. The Panthers won their first-round series vs. Tampa Bay 4-1 and are up 2-1 vs. the Boston Bruins in the second round.

Yet somehow, Florida continues to fly under the radar, dodging bettors' attention. In digital betting at BetMGM – wagers taken via online/mobile platforms – the Panthers are a distant ninth in both ticket count and money in odds to win the Stanley Cup.

"Florida never takes any bets," Cipollini said. "The Panthers were one of our best results last year and stay that way this year. We'll be rooting for them to come out of the East."

Cipollini pointed to two other teams he thinks are worth.

"Two that I like that haven't taken a ton of action are the Stars and Canucks," he said.

Vancouver survived a seven-game series with Nashville in Round 1, winning Game 7 on the road. The Canucks are tied 1-1 with Edmonton in the second round. Dallas knocked out defending champion Vegas in the first round and is tied 1-1 with Colorado in the second round.
