Betting on the North Carolina Tar Heels
One of college basketball’s most successful programs over the years has been North Carolina. The Tar Heels’ impressive resume speaks for itself with both basketball fans and bettors alike. When March rolls around, North Carolina shines the brightest as a perennial national title contender.
Tar Heels’ basketball dates all the way back to 1910. Playing as an Independent for 11 seasons, North Carolina joined the Southern Conference ahead of the 1922-1923 season.
Made up of the biggest schools in the South, this is where modern-day college basketball in this region of the country really got its start. North Carolina played in the Southern Conference until 1954. During that run, the team played for a national championship in 1946.
The Tar Heels started play in the ACC in 1953. They won their first national title in 1957 under the guidance of head coach Frank McGuire. He remained at the helm until 1962 when Dean Smith became North Carolina’s head coach.
From 1966 to 1976, Smith was the architect behind five trips to the Final Four of the annual NCAA Tournament. He finally led the team to his first national title in 1982. As a freshman, Michael Jordan hit the game-winning shot against Georgetown in that thrilling 63-62 victory.
Smith coached until 1997 and his teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament every single season from that point on. The Tar Heels added a third national title in 1993 to further highlight that incredible run.
Roy Williams was another prominent North Carolina head coach. The Tar Heels won their first national title with Williams at the helm in 2005. He stepped down in 2021 with a total of three national championships on his coaching resume.
The list of this team’s accomplishments are highlighted by six national titles. All told in 51 years of NCAA Tournament history, North Carolina has gone to the Final Four in 20 different seasons.
During that same time frame, the Tar Heels have won the ACC regular season title 39 times. They have also posted 26 championship runs in the annual conference tournament.
The Tar Heels have formed a number of rivalries during their time in the ACC, but none fiercer than the one against the Duke Blue Devils. The two schools are in close proximity to one another. North Carolina University is in the small town of Chapel Hill and Duke resides in the city of Durham, NC.
Annual showdowns between the two turn into some of the most heavily bet games of the season.
If you are betting on the Tar Heels in a legal state, you're in luck and there are plenty of options when placing your bets. A common strategy when betting on basketball is wagering on the spread. A spread looks similar to this:
- UNC -4.5
- Duke +4.5
A bettor wagering on the Tar Heels -4.5 needs them to win the game by 5 points or more to win their bet. On the other side, a bettor who wagered on Duke +4.5 can have the team lose by 4 points or less, and even win the game to collect their winnings.
Both the Tar Hells and Blue Devils have positive odds to make a long run this March. In order to make the most of March Madness, please consider the best North Carolina Sports Betting Promos.
