Betting on the Nebraska Cornhuskers

As members of the Big Ten, college football is big in Nebraska because of the Cornhuskers. Right now, you cannot legally bet on Nebraska football games in the state. However, the Cornhuskers’ strong national following makes them a popular bet wherever legal in the US.

The long and impressive backstory on University of Nebraska football dates back to 1900. The football program joined its first formal conference in 1907 as members of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA).

In 1928, Nebraska became a charter member of the Big 6 along with other football programs such as Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. Over the years, this conference changed its name each time it expanded its membership.

From 1948 to 1959, it was known as the Big 7. The addition of Oklahoma State in 1960 led to the Big 8. The modern day Big 12 made its initial debut ahead of the 1966 football season. Nebraska grew to become the face of the Big 12 along with Texas and Oklahoma.

Seeking greener pastures, the Cornhuskers accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten in 2011. The football program became the anchor of the West Division along with Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.

Over the storied history of football at Nebraska, the team won five national championships. Head coach Bob Devaney was the architect behind two of those title runs in 1970 and 1971. Tom Osborne took over the reins as head coach 1973 and held that position through the 1997 season.

Nebraska added the next three national championships to the trophy case during that amazing run (1994, 1995 and 1997).

The list of standout players at Nebraska is just as impressive. Johnny Rodgers (1972), Mike Rozier (1983), Eric Couch (2001) went on to earn Heisman Trophy honors for their stellar play on the field.

Nebraska has formed some heated rivalries over the years playing in the Big 12 and Big Ten. That is why betting the Cornhuskers as favorites remains a popular bet.

If Nebraska was set as a four-point home favorite against Wisconsin in that annual showdown, the Cornhuskers would have to beat the Badgers by five or more points to cover the spread and win that wager.

Betting in Nebraska

Nebraska lawmakers approved the necessary legislation to legalize sports betting in 2021. The state continues to work through the regulatory process as part of setting up the industry.

The way Nebraska sports betting laws were written, retail sportsbooks located in land-based casinos and race tracks were approved. Online betting through mobile sportsbooks was not part of that law.
