Betting on the Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been a focal point of Big Ten football for close to 70 years. This team has legions of college football fans across the entire country. You can now add a solid group of sports bettors in legal US markets to that growing list.

Ohio State Buckeyes Overview

As one of the charter members of the Big Ten Conference in 1953, Ohio State football dates much farther back than that.

The Buckeyes’ first football season took place in 1904. They went 6-5 playing as an Independent. Following a nine year hiatus from football, Ohio State returned to the field in 1913 as a member of the Western Conference.

During their tenure in that conference right through the 1952 season, the Buckeyes won their first college football national championship in 1942.

Success in the new Big Ten was almost overnight with a second national title in 1954. With Woody Hayes at the helm as head coach from 1951 through the 1978 season, Ohio State was the No. 1 team in the nation five times (1954, 1957, 1961, 1968 & 1970).

Moving into the 2000’s, Jim Tressel made his mark as Ohio State’s head coach with a national championship season in 2002. Urban Myer took over the reins in 2012 and led the Buckeyes to the 2014 College Football Championship.

After winning the Sugar Bowl that season as one of two semifinal playoff games, Ohio State then beat Oregon 42-20 in the first ever College Football Playoff Championship Game. Running back Ezekiel Elliott and safety Tyvis Powell were named co-MVP’s of that game.

Playing in the Big Ten has created some fierce rivalries over the years. Bordering Pennsylvania to the east, the Penn State Nittany Lions could be added to that list.

The two biggest rivals in the conference would be the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines as two other charter members of the Big Ten.

All four of those teams play in the Big Ten’s East Division to set up annual showdowns each season.

Betting on the Buckeyes as home favorites attracts quite a bit of attention. If Ohio State was listed as a seven-point home favorite against the Nittany Lions, the Buckeyes would have to beat Penn State by eight or more points to cash a winning wager.
