Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners

College football and the Oklahoma Sooners go hand-in-hand as a premier program with an outstanding record of success. This level of success has also made this national power one of the most popular college football betting teams in states with legal sports betting.

Oklahoma Sooners Team Overview

Oklahoma University’s football program started play in 1903 as an Independent program. As college football continued to expand across the country, national conferences were formed to group teams together geographically.

The Oklahoma Sooners decided to become members of the Southwest Conference in 1915. Starting in 1920, the team switched to the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) for the next eight football seasons.

In 1928, Oklahoma became a charter member of the Big 6 as the origin of the Big 8 and later the Big 12. Other notable college football programs in the original Big 6 were Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.

The Sooners’ first postseason appearance was in 1938 with a trip to the Orange Bowl following a 10-1 record in the regular season.

Starting in 1946, Oklahoma became a perennial college football power in the nation. The Sooners won their first national championship in 1950 and added two more titles that decade in 1955 and 1956. Back-to-back championships in 1974 and 1975 were followed by national title runs in 1985 and 2000.

A few of the more prominent head coaches in Oklahoma football history include Bud Wilkinson (1947-1963) and Barry Switzer (1973-1988). In more recent years, Bob Stoops guided the team as head coach for 18 seasons from 1999 through the 2016 season.

In 1948, the Big 6 expanded into the Big 7 before becoming the Big 8 in 1960. The next expansion into the Big 12 was in 1996.

Oklahoma stunned the college football world in 2021 by announcing its decision to join the SEC along with Texas. The latest this changeover would take place is after the 2024 season.

Betting on the Sooners as favorites on the point spread is a popular college football wager. If Oklahoma was favored by three points over bitter rival Texas, the Sooners would have to beat the Longhorns by four or more points to pay off on that bet.

Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners in Oklahoma

Sooners’ fans in Oklahoma cannot bet on their favorite football team in the absence of legal sportsbooks in the state. As support for legal sports betting grows, the likely option is amending Oklahoma’s compacts with federally recognized in-state gaming tribes.

An existing network of land-based tribal casinos would set up the perfect opportunity to add retail sportsbooks to their existing gaming options. In the meantime, Oklahoma Sooners’ fans can legally bet on the games in states with licensed and regulated sportsbooks. Betting on sports online remains illegal in Oklahoma.
