Betting on the San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State has quietly put together one of the more consistent Group of Five programs in the last decade. The Aztecs’ consistency and success, particularly in 2021, has fans and bettors starting to pay closer attention.

For those who believe in the Aztecs's victory, utilizing the BetMGM Promo Code could provide an additional layer of excitement.

San Diego State Football Program Overview

While the Aztecs’ football program originated in the 1920s, it did not become a part of what is now the FBS until 1969.

Immediately upon joining the highest level of college football as a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, the Aztecs ran the table, going 11-0 in its inaugural season.

For a few decades, the Aztecs ebbed and flowed, but fans undoubtedly lit up and leaned forward when superstar running back Marshall Faulk was in town. Faulk, an NFL star and Hall of Famer, played his college ball in San Diego from ’91-’93.

Despite Faulk’s greatness, San Diego State struggled until Brady Hoke arrived in 2009. Hoke took over a two-win team and won nine games in his second season. Following that season, Hoke accepted the job as Michigan’s head coach.

Hoke lasted only four seasons in Ann Arbor and made several stops as an assistant coach before returning to San Diego State under then-Head-Coach Rocky Long. Long had taken Hoke’s success and parlayed it into even more winning, including four seasons with double-digit victories.

When Long retired in 2020, Hoke again took the helm for the Aztecs and has kept the ball rolling in San Diego.

Betting on the San Diego State Aztecs in California

As it stands, sports betting is illegal in California and will be for a little while longer.

It’s possible that retail sports betting makes its way into the Golden State in 2023, though. It’s approved for a spot on the November ballot and plenty of experts assume it will pass. One caveat is that a group of opponents to the proposal are actively lobbying against it.

Cardrooms and commercial operators prefer a place for mobile and online betting on the ballot as opposed to retail, and they succeeded in early May when the required amount of signatures was gathered to get that added, too.

Regardless of what happens with the 2022 ballot, California seems to be making headway on legalized sports betting. That’s good news for bettors and the state’s finances, as it’s widely assumed California would instantly become one of the nation’s largest revenue-driving states.

If and when sports betting is legal in the Golden State, bettors can expect to see something like this with regards to the San Diego State Aztecs:

-          San Diego State -3.5

-          Fresno State +3.5

In this instance, the Aztecs are favored by 3.5 points over the Bulldogs. Bettors looking to lay the points with the Aztecs would need San Diego State to win by more than 3 points.

If San Diego State loses or wins by fewer than 3 points, Fresno State would cover the spread, and any San Diego State -3.5 wagers would settle as a loss.
