During the Don Nehlen Era (1980-2000), West Virginia produced 14 winning seasons, 13 bowl appearances, and two 11-1 seasons (1988, 1993).
The 1988 squad featured All-American quarterback Major Harris and All-American linebacker Chris Haering. It was West Virginia’s lone trip to the national title game, a loss to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
West Virginia captured 11 wins apiece and three major bowl victories (Sugar, Gator, Fiesta) in the last three seasons of Rich Rodriguez (2005-07). All-Americans included linebacker Grant Wiley, defensive back Adam “Pac Man” Jones, center Dan Mozes, and offensive tackle Ryan Stanchek.
Quarterback Pat White and punter Pat McAfee are some notable All-Americans from 2008-10.
Dana Holgorsen’s 2011 West Virginia squad went 10-3 and their 70 points in the Orange Bowl vs. Clemson set a bowl record. West Virginia joined its current conference, the Big 12, in 2012. All-purpose All American Tavon Austin was a national star in 2011 and 2012.
West Virginia’s biggest rival was Pitt for the then-annual Backyard Brawl. The rivalry will resume after 11 years when Pitt hosts West Virginia on Sept. 3.
