The Reds are one of the oldest franchises in professional baseball history, with their origins dating back to 1882. Somewhat surprisingly, the team has remained in Cincinnati the entire time.

In 1882, the Red Stockings brought professional baseball to Cincinnati. Despite the limited league size in the early days of baseball, the Reds failed to win very often. They did, however, have two World Series titles by 1940.
After a dormant stretch from the 1940s through the 1960s, the Reds burst back onto the scene in the ‘70s. In the first year of the new decade, Johnny Bench and Pete Rose led the club back to the World Series where they fell to the Orioles.
Joe Morgan’s arrival coincided with the team’s next World Series appearance in ’72 where they were defeated in seven games.
A few seasons later, the Reds climbed over the proverbial hump, twice, in the form of back-to-back World Series championships in ’75 and ’76.
Since the franchise’s borderline dominant run in the 1970s, success has been fleeting. The Reds did claim another World Series trophy in 1990, but that title was surrounded by postseason absences on either side.
Barry Larkin led that club, and Ken Griffey Jr. played the back half of his career in Cincinnati, but he wasn’t quite the same star he was in Seattle. The Reds are still looking to establish similar consistency to those memorable ‘70s clubs.
