Betting on the Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic has turned the Mavericks into must-see TV in the past several years, and, as a result, betting on the Mavericks is an intriguing proposition.
Dallas Mavericks Franchise History
In 1980, the Dallas Mavericks’ NBA life began. That season, they finished with the league’s worst record, racking up just 15 wins.
Incompetence wouldn’t last, though, as Dallas rattled off five straight playoff appearances starting in its fourth season.
The ‘90s, though, proved to be desolate for the Mavs. They made the playoffs in the 1989-90 season but wouldn’t qualify again in the entire decade.
In the early 2000s, the Mavericks’ most accomplished player, Dirk Nowitzki, emerged and righted the ship.
The German-born superstar established himself as one of the league’s best, and he helped Dallas make the playoffs 15 times in a 16-year window.
Dirk’s Running mates, Michael Finley and Suns-legend Steve Nash, made the Mavs a force to be reckoned with at the turn of the century.
Ironically, Dirk and the Mavs wouldn’t win a title until 2011, when Finley and Nash were each long-gone from Dallas.
To win it all, Dirk and a group of past-their-prime stars had to prevent LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh from being crowned in their first year together in Miami Heat.
That magical 2011 team remains the only championship team in franchise history. The arrival of Slovenian phenom Luka Doncic has many Dallas fans hopeful that the Mavericks will again find themselves NBA champions one day again. Luka did lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 NBA Season, but they fell to the Boston Celtics 4-1.
🏀 Betting on the Dallas Mavericks in Texas 🏀
Sports betting is illegal in Texas. Although the state offers DFS, sports betting will not be legal until 2023 at the earliest. Some speculation indicates 2024 or even 2025 might be more realistic.
While California is considered the largest untapped sports betting market, Texas – where everything is bigger – figures to be a sizeable market in its own right.
Mavericks’ owner and entrepreneur Mark Cuban is one prominent Texas figure in favor of sports betting legalization.
If the day comes when Mavs fans get bet on their team, they want to bet on the moneyline, which look something like this:
- Mavericks -150
- Spurs +125
Betting on the Mavericks’ moneyline means the Mavericks simply need to win the game for the bet to cash.
Here, the minus-sign indicates the Mavs are favored over the rival Spurs. Odds of -150 means a bettor would need to wager $150 to make a $100 profit with a Dallas victory.
Although there is no sports betting in Texas just yet, there are some fun DFS apps and social sportsbooks to use. Here are some of our favorites for Mavericks fans:
