Liberty vs Fever Free Picks
The Liberty took care of business in the season opener with an 85-80 win over Washington. The WNBA finalists from last season fell short of the favorite spread vs. the Mystics but still winning in a game where New York had 20 turnovers and shot below 29 percent from 3-point range is a good result.
The game was on pace to be significantly higher scoring, but New York clamped down defensively in the final quarter, holding Washington to just 13 points in the final 10 minutes to overtake Washington and secure the win. The score in that game reached just 165 but there were only four combined points in the final two minutes for an unusual finish to a close game.
The free throw counts were below average on both sides while there were 42 combined missed 3-point shots. The home opener in Indianapolis will be one of the most anticipated games in WNBA history even with the Fever suffering a blowout loss in the season opener at Connecticut on Tuesday.
Caitlin Clark had 20 points but was inefficient and had turnover issues. Her offense should be fine, but Clark and the Fever are likely to be one of the worst defensive teams in the WNBA. Connecticut shot nearly 49 percent for the game with nearly 43 percent shooting beyond the arc.
The Sun made the most of opportunities off turnovers and had success scoring inside and out. That game reached 163 even with 40 combined turnovers and the Fever held to only 14 points in the 4th quarter of a blowout result. New York averaged over 89 points per game last season and led the WNBA in 3point makes and 3-point shooting percentage.
Despite being a championship contender the Liberty were mostly an average defensive team last season, however. Last season the Sun were the #1 scoring defense in the WNBA, as Clark and the Fever's first game came against one of the toughest defensive teams in the league.
The numbers for both teams should go up on Thursday night in this high-profile game and this total isn't out of place from last season's meetings that were priced as high as 171, with the past three meetings between these teams totaling 182, 184, and 189.
