Detroit Pistons Next Head Coach Betting Odds

One year after signing him to one of the most expensive contracts for a basketball coach in history, the Detroit Pistons have dismissed Monty Williams as the team’s head coach after going 14-68 in his first season with the team. Now Tom Gores and Co. will be on the search for somebody new to lead their club through a tough time in the storied franchise’s history. While it is still early in the process, we took a look at some of the most often mentioned candidates to replace Williams.

Right now James Borrego is considered the favorite to land the position with +200 odds. The current New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach has previously served as the head coach of the Orlando Magic (in an interim role) and the Charlotte Hornets, compiling a career record of 148-183. Borrego also won two NBA Championships as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. Sitting right behind Borrego is former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson at +600. Atkinson had a record of 118-190 in Brooklyn and currently serves as an assistant coach under Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors, where he won his first NBA title in 2022.

Chris Quinn (+1100) and Micah Nori (+1900) represent the next tier of options. None of them have head coaching experience at any level, but Quinn and Nori have each spent at least a decade as an assistant coach in the NBA. JJ Redick was touted as a potential candidate, however has recently been hired for the Los Angeles Lakers head coach opening after Dan Hurley passed on the position. Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant (+2500) is also reportedly under consideration.

Beyond them Sean Sweeney (+3000), David Adelman (+3200), Sam Cassell (+3300) and Will Weaver (+3500) are seen as candidates with longer odds. None of these options have NBA head coaching experience, though Weaver and Adelman have served in head coaching roles at other levels and Cassell just won a NBA Championship as an assistant with the Boston Celtics. All four spent last season on an NBA staff.

Jerome Allen and JB Bickerstaff (+4000 each) round out our list of candidates. Bickerstaff has the most NBA head coaching experience out of anybody on our list, having spent at least part of eight seasons as a head coach with the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, and most recently the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bickerstaff has struggled tremendously in the playoffs though, leading his teams to just seven victories in 22 appearances. Allen has spent time as a NBA assistant after serving as the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania.

Only time will tell who the Pistons will choose to lead their team into the future, especially as they also dismissed their general manager, a position that is likely to be filled first so that the new GM can play a role in the hiring of a new coach.
