Vasseur can be Ferrari’s new Jean Todt

Formula 1 will return this weekend as the 2023 season flags off in Bahrain.

It will be interesting to see how Ferrari fare this season with a new leader at the helm, in the form of Frederic Vasseur, who previously headed Alfa Romeo.

We had a chat with two-time F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi to discuss his expectations from Ferrari and how Vasseur can turn things around.

Frederic Vasseur can be Ferrari’s new Jean Todt

Straight from the bat, Fittipaldi remarked that Vasseur can impact Ferrari in the same way that the legendary Jean Todt did.

Todt, as team principal, oversaw a period of unprecedented success for Ferrari as Michael Schumacher joined the team and won five straight World Championships from 2000 to 2004.

Fittipaldi cited Vasseur’s experience as the reason why he feels he has the potential to emulate Todt.

"I see Ferrari with Frederic Vasseur now. I know him well and I know his capacity as team manager. He has been a team owner for many years."

"If you remember when Jean Todt went to Ferrari and turned them around, made things happen. Very strong team, dominated F1 with Michael Schumacher."

"Frederic Vasseur has the potential to do something similar."

Vasseur and LeClerc speaking the same language will help a lot

Fittipaldi also remarked that both Vasseur and Charles LeClerc speaking French will help smoothen out any direct communication issues.

"Fred and Charles. They speak the same language (laughs). That's a big help."

"I'm sure Frederic Vasseur and Charles will have a better understanding with each other. They won't have to translate to any other language, they have their own."

He also thinks that the team dynamic between LeClerc and Carlos Sainz will be a key observation point throughout the season.

"Carlos had some very good performances and it's another year for him at Ferrari. He knows the team well, he knows the engineers, the team knows him well. It will be interesting to see the dynamic between Carlos and Charles.”

All big teams have cycles and I expect Ferrari to be back on top

Ferrari had started the 2022 season very strongly but team management issues came to the fore and they had to finish behind Red Bull.

Fittipaldi, however, believes that it was part of a cycle that all big F1 teams go through.

"It will be interesting to see Ferrari running stronger and making different strategic plans for the races."

"Ferrari will always be part of Formula 1. Formula 1 doesn't exist without Ferrari."

"All the big teams, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, Williams, even Sauber now. They have a historical cycle of success. They go down to the bottom and come back again. It's a question of when they come back, they will come back."

"Ferrari will come back very strong."
