Big Ten Men’s Basketball: No. 21 Michigan vs. No. 11 Purdue Preview, Prediction

It’ll be a Big Ten clash of ranked opponents when No. 21 Michigan squares off against No. 11 Purdue on Friday at 8:00 p.m. (ET) in West Lafayette, Indiana. 

This is the first of two matchups this season between the Wolverines and Boilermakers, with the other set for Feb. 11 in Ann Arbor. Currently, Michigan is second and Purdue is third in the conference standings. 

Opponents have struggled mightily at Mackey Arena this season. Purdue boasts a 9-1 home record. 

Purdue (15-5, 7-2 conference) had its seven-game winning streak snapped after losing 73-70 vs. visiting Ohio State on Jan. 21. The Buckeyes drained eight 3-pointers in the second half.

Trey Kaufman-Renn tied a career-high with 26 points in the loss. The junior forward leads Purdue in points (18.3) and rebounds (6.5) per game. 

Junior guard Braden Smith is averaging 15.0 points and leads Purdue in assists (8.9) and steals (2.3). 

Purdue’s defense has been stout. The Boilermakers rank third in the conference in points per game allowed (67.7) despite opponents shooting 43.3 percent (12th in Big Ten). The last time Purdue allowed over 75 points was during an 83-78 victory vs. Maryland on Dec. 8. 

Offensively, Purdue ranks third in field goal percentage (49.0) in the conference. 

Michigan (14-4, 6-1 conference) is off to a strong start in its first season under new head coach Dusty May. The Wolverines are 4-1 in their last five games, with the lone defeat coming in overtime at Minnesota on Jan. 16. 

Michigan bounced back from that loss with an 80-76 overtime victory vs. visiting Northwestern on Jan. 19. Michigan earned the win despite shooting a season-low 36 percent.

The Wolverines went 9 of 10 at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win. Senior center Vladislav Golden paced Michigan with 31 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. 

Golden and junior center Danny Wolf form an imposing frontcourt for the Wolverines. Golden leads Michigan in points (16.4) and blocks (1.8). Wolf is averaging 12.5 points and 1.4 blocks while leading Michigan in rebounds (10.2). 

Junior guard Tre Donaldson is another key contributor for the Wolverines. Donaldson is second on Michigan in points (12.6) and also leads the team in assists (4.3). 

Michigan’s offense is flouring under May’s system. The Wolverines lead the conference in field goal percentage (50.6) and rank third in points (84.6). Michigan has scored at least 80 points in its last 10 games. 

Defensively, Michigan is holding opponents to the second worst field goal percentage (39.6) in the conference. The Wolverines are fifth in the conference in 3-point percentage defense (29.7). 

Purdue is 3-3 this season against ranked teams. The Boilermakers beat Alabama, Ole Miss, and Oregon. The losses came against Marquette, Texas A&M, and Auburn

Michigan is 3-1 this season vs. ranked opponents, defeating Xavier, Wisconsin, and UCLA while losing to Oklahoma.
