Leading The Way

At 22-2 SU through Feb. 12, Auburn is having a bang-up season so far. The Tigers opened the season on a 7-0 SU run that included wins over Houston, Iowa State, North Carolina and Memphis.

Then came the first loss for Bruce Pearl's troops – to the team currently on the Tigers' heels in March Madness futures odds. Auburn lost at Duke 84-78 on Dec. 4.

But the Tigers then went on a 14-0 tear, including wins over Purdue and Tennessee. That run ended with a 90-81 home loss to Florida.

Last April, Auburn opened +3000 in NCAA Tournament odds. The Tigers are now the +400 favorite at BetMGM.

Meanwhile, Duke (21-3 SU) went on a 16-game win streak after losing a neutral-site game vs. Kansas 75-72 on Nov. 26. The Blue Devils didn't lose again until a 77-71 setback at Clemson on Feb. 8.

Duke opened as the +1100 co-favorite with Kansas months ago at BetMGM and is now the +425 second choice.

"Auburn looks like they are the real deal, so long as Johni Broome is healthy for them. Duke can't seem to lose [much] at this point, and Cooper Flagg has looked incredible for them," BetMGM trading manager Seamus Magee said.

"These are two teams we can't seem to make short enough on the odds board for the national championship. Bettors are flocking to them after each win."

Trending Teams

Florida has been a big mover in March Madness odds over the course of 2024-25 campaign. The Gators opened the season on a 13-0 SU firestorm.

That run ended with a 106-100 track-meet loss at Kentucky on Jan. 4. But Florida followed with an impressive 73-43 home blowout of Tennessee. And as noted above, the Gators ended Auburn's 14-game win streak on Feb. 8.

"Florida has seen some of the biggest movement since the season started. After opening at 50/1, they now sit at 12/1 to win the whole thing in March," Magee said.

Trending the wrong way is two-time defending national champion UConn. The Huskies (17-7) had a bumpy early-season trip to Hawaii, going 0-3 SU. They then got it together with an eight-game win streak.

But UConn has been a middling team over the past six weeks. Through Feb. 13, the Huskies are 5-4 SU in their last nine games. For context, UConn only had three losses all of last season, going 37-3 SU en route to a second straight championship.

UConn is now the +3000 co-ninth choice, with Kansas and Kentucky.

The Huskies were hampered by the absence of freshman forward Liam McNeeley (13.6 ppg/5.8 rpg), who missed eight games after a Jan. 1 ankle injury. McNeeley is now back in the lineup.

"Coach Hurley always seem to get his guys going when March comes around," Magee said. "Action seems to have slowed on the Huskies. But being as popular as they are, they're still a liability for the book.

"Lots of that action was in preseason. We tend to see all the action ramp up on the futures as we get closer to March."

Tickets, Money and Liability

Duke is No. 1 in tickets and money in BetMGM's March Madness odds market. And it's not particularly close. The Blue Devis have almost two times more tickets than No. 2 Kansas and 1.5 times more money than No. 2 Auburn.

The Jayhawks are No. 3 in money, while the Tigers are No. 3 in tickets.

Magee said Duke, UConn and Auburn are the most notable liabilities for the book. BetMGM is rooting for Tennessee, Houston and Iowa State.

The Vols (20-5 SU), who won their first 14 games this season, are the +1600 co-sixth choice with Iowa State. Houston (20-4 SU) is the +900 co-third choice with Alabama (21-3 SU), behind only Auburn and Duke in BetMGM's March Madness futures odds.

Iowa State (19-5 SU) is perhaps the surprising co-sixth choice at +1600, and in fact was as short as +1100. The Cyclones opened +3000, then went 15-1 SU in their first 16 games, with the last of those a 74-57 home rout of Kansas.

Speaking of Kansas, among others:

"Kentucky, Alabama and Kansas all still great results for now," Magee said, intimating all three teams could see plenty of action as the season rolls toward March.

Flying Under The Radar

Magee pointed to a couple of under-the-radar teams perhaps worth a look at this point. First: Texas A&M (19-5 SU), which opened +10000 (100/1) in BetMGM's March Madness odds. The Aggies are now all the way into +4000.

"I think this Texas A&M team has a deep run in them this year. The Aggies are going to be a really tough team to knock out," Magee said.

Louisville (19-6 SU) went on a 10-game win streak from Dec. 21-Jan. 28, part of a current 13-1 tear through games of Feb. 13. The Cardinals opened a distant +15000 (150/1) and can still be had for +10000 (100/1).

"I'm starting to buy into [coach] Pat Kelsey and Louisville," Magee said. "This team is really fun to watch and could be worth a flier for a March run.

"The Cardinals won 10 straight games and will probably be favored to win every game they have left going into the ACC Tournament."
