Betting on the Duke Blue Devils
As one of the nation’s true blue-bloods, Duke has always been a polarizing team. That makes them a popular team to bet on and, perhaps, an even more popular team to bet against.
For those who believe in Duke's victory, utilizing the BetMGM Promo Code could provide an additional layer of excitement.
Duke Men’s Basketball History
Duke had sporadic success in its early years, including two trips to the national title game across the 60s and 70s.
It wasn’t until the Blue Devils hired Mike Krzyzewski that they made winning part of their culture.
Since Coach K’s arrival, Duke has established itself as arguably the premiere program in all of college basketball.
About a decade into his career at Duke, Coach K took the Blue Devils to four national title games in five years and won two of them – back-to-back – in ’91 and ’92.
Duke’s dominance in the ‘90s can largely be attributed to infamous college basketball villain, Christian Laettner. He, Grant Hill, and Bobby Hurley led those uber-talented Blue Devils teams for several seasons.
Duke’s next title came in 2001. Jay Williams, Shane Battier, and a handful of other future NBA players capped off a 35-win season with a championship victory over Arizona.
In the 2000s, Duke’s reign continued, and it routinely entered the NCAA tournament with a top-2 seed.
In 2010, Duke defeated that tournament’s Cinderella, Butler, to take home its 4th national championship. That team was led by Duke’s coach-in-waiting, Jon Scheyer.
After a short hiatus from the NCAA Basketball apex, Coach K and Duke reached the summit once again in 2015, for a fifth time, on the backs of star Freshmen Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones, and Justise Winslow.
The Blue Devils have had their fair share of talent in the one-and-done era. Durham has welcomed one-season stars like Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero.
Betting on Duke in North Carolina
Sports betting is legal in North Carolina at two Harrah’s Casino locations. Online betting however, is not legal yet.
A bill involving widespread legal sports betting passed through the House Commerce Committee in North Carolina in November of 2021.
If the bill passes through the House Judiciary Committee in 2022, sports betting could soon be legalized in the Tar Heel State.
If you were betting on a Duke basketball game, you might be placing a wager on the Blue Devils knocking off their rival, who shares a nickname with the teams’ home state.
Let’s use the example below:
· Duke -3
· North Carolina +3
In this instance, Duke is favored by 3 points. If Duke wins by more than three, they cover the spread. If they win by fewer than three, or if they lose, North Carolina covers the spread. If Duke wins by exactly three, a spread bet on either team would result in a push. In that case, the bettor gets their money back.
