Betting on the Baylor Bears
The Baylor Bears’ redemption story is something out of a movie. It’s a unique, slow-burn redemption that many casual fans are unaware of.
Baylor Bears Men's Basketball History
Baylor appeared in, but lost, the national title all the way back in 1948. The following year, the AP began ranking the nation’s top teams.
In the AP poll’s inaugural season, Baylor ranked as highly as 18th. They then appeared in the AP poll just once until the 2007-08 season. Since resurfacing in the AP poll, Baylor has ranked inside the top-25 in every season besides 2018-19.
In 2021, the years of frustration and ineptitude were put in the rearview as Baylor claimed its first national championship, taking down the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs.
Baylor Guard Jared Butler was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament. His teammates Davion Mitchell, MaCio Teague, and Mark Vital played an integral part in immortalizing Baylor basketball.
The Bears’ road to redemption was an unusual one. After an inconceivable tragedy struck the program in 2003, the NCAA began investigations into multiple allegations against the basketball team.
The school’s self-imposed sanctions and the NCAA’s penalties devastated the program for almost 10 years. Shortly after, Scott Drew took a head coaching job nobody else in the country wanted.
After nearly two decades, Drew and the Bears completed one of the most unlikely redemption stories in American college sports.
Betting on the Baylor Bears in Texas
Sports betting is illegal in Texas, and it will be until at least 2023.
There were discussions in 2021 about potential legalization, but those talks stalled when the legislative session ended. Since then, there have been only minor developments on the topic.
Pro-sports-betting Texans and outsiders will continue to make their case for legal sports betting throughout 2022.
Las Vegas Sands Corporation, a Nevada-based casino and resort company, hired a team of lobbyists to explain to lawmakers how Texas could benefit from building four resorts across the state.
For now, though, the Lone Star State doesn’t offer sports betting and appears to be in the back of the legalization pack.
Despite the state of Texas sports betting in 2022, Baylor fans and bettors alike should be prepared when they’re finally able to place wagers on the Bears using BetMGM, DraftKings or FanDuel.
A common bet type in college basketball is a spread bet. We’ll look at the example to below to explain how it works:
· Baylor +3
· Kansas -3
In this instance, Baylor is the underdog. If a bettor backs Baylor with the spread, they need one of two things to happen to win their bet.
An outright Baylor victory and a Baylor loss of fewer than 3 points would cash a Baylor +3 wager.
We’ll be sure to share any relevant news regarding the ongoing push to legalize sports betting in Texas!
