Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones

In a state with only college teams to cheer for, the Iowa State men’s basketball team has become a popular betting option.

Unfortunately for Cyclones fans, there isn’t much history to brag about with just 20 total NCAA Tournament appearances, 1 Final Four – in 1944 – and 0 national championships.

It’s not all bad, though. Iowa State has contended for the Big 12 title and earned a 4-seed or better in a handful of seasons.

Future NBA point guard Jamaal Tinsley was a key part of the Cyclones’ success in the early 2000s.

In 2000 and 2001, the Cyclones earned back-to-back 2-seeds and won consecutive Big 12 regular season titles. The 2000 season concluded with a loss in the Elite 8.

Perhaps the most exciting and consistent run in Iowa State’s basketball history came in the mid-2010s with Fred Hoiberg captaining the ship.

Hoiberg took a team that hadn’t made the tournament in six seasons and, in a couple seasons, turned them into a popular March Madness bracket pick.

First, the trio of DeAndre Kane, Melvin Ejim, and Georges Niang led the Cyclones to the Sweet 16. The following year, it was Niang and Monte Morris who had college basketball fans picking them to make a deep run.

Unexpectedly, the 3rd-seeded Cyclones were knocked off by the 14th-seeded UAB Blazers in the round of 64.

Now, Iowa State is trying to reemerge as a yearly contender in the loaded Big 12.

A common wager typically placed on a basketball game is the spread. Let’s use a game between the Cyclones and their in-state rivals as an example of how to wager.

  • Iowa State -2.5
  • Iowa +2.5

In this instance, the Cyclones are 2.5-point favorites over the Hawkeyes. A bettor taking Iowa State -2,5 needs the Cyclones to win by at least 3 points to win their bet.

If the Cyclones win by fewer than 3 points, or lose outright, the Hawkeyes cover the spread, and the bettor’s wager settles as a loss.

Betting in Iowa

In 2019, Iowa became the 11th state to legalize sports betting. It offers both online and retail betting and has a plethora of options for prospective bettors.

Practically all of the major online US sportsbooks are up and running in Iowa and are providing fruitful welcome offers for new bettors, including DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet.

The state’s tax revenue more-than-tripled from 2020 to 2021. The Hawkeye state has a low 6.75 percent tax rate, making it a more affordable market for major sportsbooks.

That plays a key factor in Iowa hauling in significant revenue numbers despite the absence of any professional sports teams.
