The Redbox bowl began in in 2002 and the matchup currently features schools from the Pac-12and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) or Big Ten. The game takes place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California after the first 12 contests were played at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This game was previously called the San Francisco Bowl, Emerald Bowl, Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, Fight Hunger Bowl and most recently the Foster Farms Bowl. 

In seven of the first nine matchups, the underdog cashed tickets, including outright wins by the 'dogs from 2003-06. Favorites are 4-2 the past six years and the Pac-12 won three of those games but that run came to an end in 2015 when Nebraska ran past UCLA 37-29. Utah got the Pac-12 back on the winning streak in 2016 when it defeated Indiana 26-24, but the Big Ten got revenge with Purdue's 38-35 win against Arizona in the 2017 installment. 

In the 2019 edition, California captured a 35-20 win over Illinois as a six-point favorite and the Pac-12 school snapped a four-game covering streak by underdogs.
