Flavor of the Week

Colorado wideout/defensive back Travis Hunter has been lapping the field all season in wagering on 2024 Heisman Trophy odds. At BetMGM, he's No. 1 by a mile in both ticket count and money.

A week ago, Hunter finally became the solo No. 1 on the odds board, as well, at +100. And after a perceived strong two-way showing in Week 12 vs. Utah, he solidified that standing.

Hunter had relatively modest stats: five catches for 55 yards. But he also ran for a touchdown and had an interception in Colorado's 49-24 home win. So BetMGM made a significant move to -200 as the game ended, and Hunter is now out to -500.

Hunter has twice as many tickets as +425 second choice Ashton Jeanty and +1400 third choice Cam Ward. And Hunter has taken 2.5 times more money than Jeanty and Ward..

Hunter is taking 3.5 times the tickets and almost five times the money of Dillon Gabriel. The Oregon QB slid from +350 all the way to +2200 – which is now fourth – after a lackluster showing in a 16-14 win at Wisconsin.

"Travis Hunter is the best player in college football. Everyone thought that coming into the season," Magee said. "The only thing he needs to win the Heisman is to play on a playoff-caliber team. Well, here we go.

"Colorado controls its destiny to the playoffs. If the Buffs make the College Football Playoff, it would be very surprising to see someone other than Hunter win the Heisman."

And that would be huge boon for BetMGM customers.

"He's our No. 1 liability for the Heisman, and that won't be changing anytime soon," Magee said.

Others To Watch

Ashton Jeanty continues to pile up huge numbers for Boise State. (Getty)

Jeanty had another big game in Week 12, with 33 carries for 159 yards and three TDs as Boise State beat San Jose State 42-21. Jeanty now has 1,896 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns in 10 games.

Those are gaudy stats, to be sure. But as noted above, that still puts him second to Hunter in BetMGM's Heisman Trophy odds. A week ago, Hunter was the +400 third choice. Now, he's the second choice, but at +425.

"Jeanty is a name I haven't seen lighting up our screens in a couple weeks. His liability is way down from what it used to be," Magee said.

Miami QB Cam Ward is the third choice, but his odds continued to slide. A week ago, following an upset loss at Georgia Tech, Ward went from the +200 co-favorite to the +850 fourth choice.

Now, after a bye week, but with Hunter and Jeanty creating separation, Ward is +1400 in Heisman odds.

Gabriel was at +350 a week ago, right in the thick of the race. But his Oregon Ducks nearly lost at Wisconsin as two-touchdown favorites. Gabriel completed 22 of 31 passes for 218 yards, with no TDs and one INT in a 16-13 win.

So Gabriel is now the fourth choice, but at +2200, as odds on the field really begin to spread out.

Alabama QB Jalen Milroe had a huge game in a big Week 11 win at LSU. Milroe had 12 carries for 185 yards and four touchdowns, as the Crimson Tide rolled 42-13.

That helped Milroe get to +1800 in Heisman odds at BetMGM. However, with ostensibly a bye in Week 12 – Alabama blasted Mercer 52-7 – Milroe slid out to the +3000 fifth choice.

"We definitely were taking some fliers on him during the game vs. LSU," BetMGM trading manager Seamus Magee said. "I think an SEC championship for Alabama could see Milroe have a punter's chance here.

"He's going to have to look spectacular, as well. He's a good winner for us, so we wouldn't mind seeing him take the trophy home."

A week ago, the top six players were +1800 or shorter in odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Now, only three players are.

Flying Under The Radar

Magee pointed to two more players who might be worth bet in Heisman Trophy odds, as the season heads to Week 13. First up: Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart.

In a huge Week 11 matchup vs. Georgia, Dart wasn't spectacular and in fact missed a couple series after an early ankle injury. But he returned and ultimately helped the Rebels to a 28-10 victory.

And that came a week a 63-31 road blowout of Arkansas, Dart completed 25 of 31 passes for a whopping 515 yards and six touchdowns.

"Jaxson Dart had one of the best games by an SEC quarterback in a long time against Arkansas," Magee said. "It seemed like his dream was over, but he moved as short as 10/1 at one point on [that] afternoon."

Postgame, Dart slid out to +2000 in BetMGM's 2024 Heisman Trophy odds. After Week 12, in which Ole Miss had a bye, Dart fell all the way to the +5000 seventh choice.

"If Ole Miss wins out, then there is a very real world in which he could be on the stage in New York and have a shot at winning this thing," Magee said. "I still like Dart as a dark horse. He's got some games left he could go ahead and stat pad to help his case."

Second up: QB Kurtis Rourke, who has Indiana at a perfect 10-0 SU, and for what it's worth, the Hoosiers are a rock-solid 8-2 ATS, too. In Week 11 vs. Michigan, he was mediocre in completing 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and two TDs, with one interception.

However, he jumped from +2500 to +1600 in BetMGM's Heisman odds. But Rourke and Indiana had a bye in Week 12, and he slid out to the +3000 sixth choice.

Rourke wasn't even added to Heisman odds until Sept. 22, when you could've gotten him at +10000 (100/1).

"If Indiana goes undefeated, I find it hard to believe that Kurtis Rourke won't be on the stage," Magee said. "The Hoosiers are a fantastic story in college football right now, and Rourke is a significant reason why they have a shot at making the College Football Playoff.

"It all comes down to the [Nov. 23] Ohio State game for Rourke. If Indiana wins that game, you will probably see a seismic shift in his odds."
