Flavor of the Week

Colorado wideout/defensive back Travis Hunter has been lapping the field all season in wagering on 2024 Heisman Trophy odds. At BetMGM, he's No. 1 by a mile in both ticket count and money.

Hunter has twice as many tickets as +200 co-favorite Cam Ward and +500 fourth choice Ashton Jeanty. And money on Hunter is running 2.5 times greater than Ward and Jeanty. A week ago, Hunter was +250 and Ward +300.

Hunter's Buffaloes had a bye in Week 10. In Week 9 against Cincinnati, Hunter had nine catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

"It appears that sometimes not playing, and letting others have an off game, can be more beneficial than actually playing in one week," BetMGM trading manager Seamus Magee said. "Hunter is our biggest liability for the Heisman. Bettors seem to pile on him more as each week passes."

But can Hunter overcome the QB bias for the award, or Jeanty's gaudy statistics?

"I think if Miami slips up and loses a game before the Heisman ceremony, you could see Hunter take a big step forward to possibly bringing the award home," Magee said. "If Colorado is playing in the Big 12 championship game, I'm wondering if this could be wrapped up for him.

"Surely there'd be enough evidence in that alone to prove his value to his team."

Ward was in action for Week 10 and had a monster game against Duke. In the third quarter, Miami trailed 28-17. But Ward then got the Hurricanes going in what became a 53-31 blowout win.

Ward finished with 401 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Others To Watch

Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel also remains firmly in the mix, as the +300 third choice in BetMGM's odds to win the Heisman Trophy. In Week 10 at Michigan, Gabriel had a workmanlike game, completing 22 of 34 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown.

He also ran three times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

"I think Gabriel is really going to have to put his foot on the gas to break into the favorite category," Magee said. "Ashton Jeanty is the interesting one, because he continues to put up video-game numbers each week, it seems."

The Boise State running back has racked up jaw-dropping numbers most of the season. In Weeks 9 and 10, he still had great games, but not massive numbers.

Jeanty had 33 carries for 128 yards and a TD in a 29-24 win at UNLV in Week 9. He followed with 31 carries for 149 yards and two TDs in a 56-24 home rout of San Diego State in Week 10.

For the season, Jeanty has rushed for 1,525 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"Jeanty is currently a decent liability," Magee said. "But the bets have certainly dried up a bit compared to the steam he's gotten in the previous weeks, coupled with Hunter, Ward and Gabriel continuing their stellar play for nationally prominent programs.

"Jeanty is a bigger liability than Ward, but not bigger than Hunter. Gabriel would be a fantastic winner for the house."

Flying Under The Radar

Magee pointed to two more players who might be worth bet in Heisman Trophy odds, as the season hits Week 11. First up: Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart. In a 63-31 Week 10 road blowout of Arkansas, Dart completed 25 of 31 passes for a whopping 515 yards and six touchdowns.

"Jaxson Dart had one of the best games by an SEC quarterback in a long time against Arkansas," Magee said. "It seemed like his dream was over, but he moved as short as 10/1 at one point on Saturday afternoon."

Dart is now the +2000 fifth choice, but he could make another move if with an impressive showing vs. visiting Georgia in Week 11.

"If Ole Miss wins out, and that would include a win over Georgia, then there is a very real world in which he could be on the stage in New York and have a shot at winning this thing," Magee said.

Rourke has Indiana at a perfect 9-0 SU, and for what it's worth, the Hoosiers are a nation-leading 8-1 ATS, too. He didn't have huge Week 10 numbers, but he was efficient. Rourke completed 19 of 29 passes for 263 yards and four TDs.

He has 19 TD passes against just three interceptions this season. Rourke wasn't even listed in BetMGM's Heisman Trophy odds until Sept. 22, opening at +10000 (100/1). He's now the +2500 sixth choice.

"If Indiana goes undefeated, I find it hard to believe that Kurtis Rourke won't be on the stage," Magee said. "The Hoosiers are a fantastic story in college football right now, and Rourke is a significant reason why they have a shot at making the College Football Playoff.

"If the Hoosiers beat Michigan this weekend, all eyes will be on Ohio Stadium [Nov. 23], when the Hoosiers have to take on Ohio State."
