  • Opening moneyline: LSU -225/USC +180

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Less than four hours before kickoff at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium, the Tigers are laying 4 points on BetMGM's LSU vs USC odds board. That's down 2.5 points from the LSU -6.5 opener back on May 27.

All the movement occurred over the past two weeks. The line got down to Tigers -4.5 on Aug. 21, and today, it's toggled between -4.5/-4 a couple of times.

"Lots of money coming in on LSU and Over today," BetMGM trading manager Seamus Magee said. "The sharps like USC, the public likes LSU. And the sharps and public are aligned on the Over.

"We need USC +4.5 and Under."

BetMGM's total is at its peak of 66.5 (Over -115), going up 2 points just today, with a stop at 65.5 along the way. The total opened at 62.5 and got to 64.5 Monday, then was stagnant until today's moves.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET SATURDAY: A day before this Top 20 showdown, Twinspires Sportsbook has the Tigers -5 in LSU vs USC odds. The line opened at LSU -6 and dipped to -5 and -4, where it sat Friday before climbing back up a point.

LSU is seeing 71% of early spread tickets, but 75% of early spread cash is on Southern Cal.

"It's Pros vs. Joes. The Pros are on USC spread," TwinSpires director of retail sports Zachary Lucas said.

The total opened at 63.5 and is up to 64.5, with 70% of tickets/59% of money on the Over.

UPDATE 7 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: Louisiana State is coming off a 10-3 SU/8-5 ATS season that could've easily been a little bit better. The Tigers might well have beaten Alabama in Week 10, if QB Jayden Daniels didn't get hurt in the second half.

A win there could've helped LSU reach a New Year's Six game. Instead, Chip Kelly's squad settled for the Reliaquest Bowl, beating Wisconsin 35-31.

Southern Cal had a bumpier-than-expected 2023 campaign. The Trojans went 8-5 SU and were 4-9 ATS, among the worst spread-covering outfits in the nation. But Southern Cal finished on a high note, beating Louisville 42-28 in the Holiday Bowl.

Neither Heisman Trophy winner Daniels – the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft – nor USC QB Caleb Williams – the No. 1 overall pick – played in the bowl games. So both squads have new QBs, Garrett Nussmeier at LSU and Miller Moss at USC.

BetMGM spent almost all summer at either LSU -6.5 flat or -6.5 (-105). But on Aug. 21, the Tigers dropped to -4.5 in LSU vs USC odds, for Sunday night's neutral-site matchup at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

"We're getting really balanced action at LSU -4.5," BetMGM trading manager Seamus Magee said. "On the moneyline, handle is pretty close to 50/50. But with USC +165 right now, the Trojans are a loser for us if they win outright.

"However, a lot can change between now and Sunday."

BetMGM's moneyline opened July 11 at LSU -225/USC +180 and, as Magee alluded to, is now LSU -200/USC +165. The total opened at 62.5, went to 63.5 on Aug. 16 and then to 64.5 Monday.

"There's not really a need on the total just yet. But I imagine with these two schools, there won't be any shortage of Over bettors come kickoff," Magee said.
