NCAA FOOTBALL TEAMS WITH THE MOST BANDWAGON FANS
No matter the sport and no matter the team, chances are some of the fans fall under the “bandwagon” category. Maybe they just moved and they’re supporting their local team, or maybe they just like a team that wins games and championships. It’s no different when it comes to college football, as many fans aren’t afraid to hop on that bandwagon.
To determine which NCAA Division I football team and which conference has the most bandwagon fans, we surveyed 2,000 of college football fans around the country.
With 18 national championships, 32 conference championships, and an NCAA record of 73 postseason bowl appearances, it comes as no surprise that the University of Alabama ranks number one for teams with the most bandwagon fans. People love cheering for teams that actually win things, even if they aren’t Crimson Tide alumni.
Following Alabama is Clemson University, as the Tigers have the second-most bandwagon fans in all of college football. Rounding out the top five for the most bandwagon fans are The Ohio State University, Notre Dame, and Florida State. Turns out a lot of people enjoy cheering for the Buckeyes, the Irish, and Seminoles.
But not all schools are known for their bandwagon fans. Ole Miss, the University of North Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, and Oklahoma all have the least amount of bandwagon fans. Their fanbase stands true, and according to survey respondents, don’t appear to have an influx of fans jumping on the bandwagon. Perhaps these fans are the most loyal and true.
BANDWAGON FANS BY CONFERENCE
It’s not just individual schools that are seen for having bandwagon fans. Respondents also ranked each of the Power Five conferences to definitively see how bandwagon fans rank. The SEC leads the pack when it comes to overall fans who just jump on the support train, followed closely by the Big Ten. Following the Big Ten are the PAC-12, the Big 12, and the ACC.
We also asked survey respondents to rank schools within each of the Power Five conferences. Alabama (obviously) leads the SEC for bandwagon fans, followed by Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, and Florida.
For the Big Ten, tOSU dominates the conference, followed by Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Indiana. The University of California Berkeley reigns supreme for PAC-12 bandwagon fans, followed by USC, UCLA, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona. In the Big 12, we have Baylor, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.
The ACC wraps up the conferences with the most bandwagon fans. Clemson takes the top spot in this conference, followed by Florida State, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Boston College.
METHODOLOGY
In November 2021, we surveyed 2,004 NCAA football fans from around the country to ask them about their opinions on NCAA football bandwagon fans. 50% of respondents were male and 50% were female. The average age of respondents was 31.
