2022 Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The Bulldogs took a step forward in 2021 following a strange season full of tumult in the 2020 COVID-shortened season. Mississippi State won seven games in the regular season before getting shellacked in the Liberty Bowl by Texas Tech, 34-7. But still, there were plenty of positives.

QB Will Rogers emerged as a top-flight SEC quarterback, thriving under offensive guru Mike Leach, completing a whopping 75.1% of his passes for 4,449 yards, 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He is a traditional pocket passer, and he'll never be confused for a dual threat by any means. But that's OK, that's the system Leach employs, and it is ultra effective, especially at the college level.

Mississippi State returns eight starters on offense, and eight starters on defense, which is great news for the Bulldogs to build upon last season's winning record.

It isn't all about the Air Raid offense in Stark Vegas, though. RBs Dillon Johnson and Jo'quavious Marks are bona fide SEC backs capable of big things when their number is called. And WRs Jaden Walley and Austin Williams are studs in the pass game, with Walley like a poor man's Cooper Kupp working out of the slot.

On the defensive side of the ball, the entire D-line plus one returns. Jordan Davis missed the entire season due to a knee injury, and will also rotate in. Jett Johnson not only has one of the best names in the country, but he is a top-notch SEC linebacker along with Nathaniel Watson and Tyrus Wheat.

The back end of the defense could be a little shaky, and that's the biggest concern. Mississippi State might need to outscore opponents because the secondary is a bit green. Martin Emerson left early for the NFL, and safety Fred Peters has also moved along. They did add Marcus Banks as a transfer from Alabama, so he should help.

Looking at the sked, though, it's pretty brutal, at least on the road. Road trips to Arizona, LSU, Kentucky and Alabama, as well as the Egg Bowl rivalry game on Thanksgiving night against Ole Miss is almost unfair. It's possible State could go 1-4 in those games. But the home slate is likely to net them at least five or six wins. I think Mississippi State is a bowl team, but 6-6 looks like the most likely outcome. And with that schedule, which features both Alabama and Georgia in a crossover game, that'd be a very good season.

MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS ODDS TO WIN SEC CHAMPIONSHIP

+8000

Pump the brakes on any championship talk. Attaining bowl eligibility, and beating Ole Miss in the annual Egg Bowl rivalry game would be a championship for this team. The schedule is brutal, and the secondary has A LOT of questions. This isn't a team which will be able to get past Alabama, Arkansas, LSU and/or Texas A&M in the SEC West Division.

MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+12500

While Mike Leach and his Air Raid offense have been extremely fun to watch, and he has been successful at previous stops at Texas Tech and Washington State, national titles have not followed. He has some good teams, even some great teams, and he has developed plenty of players for the next level. But national titles haven't been in the cards, and it won't be this season in Starkville, either.

MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS

Will Rogers (QB) +8000

Rogers is in a great system for huge numbers and a lot of success. But as mentioned, he'll also be facing a difficult schedule, and players on teams barely qualifying for bowl games and/or a winning record are rarely invited to New York for the Heisman festivities. That's OK, though. He might not win the Heisman, but if he takes another step forward this season, he is going to be a tremendous NFL prospect.
