2022 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions
2022 NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW
Marcus Freeman will have his work cut out for him. Although some Notre Dame fans were ready to move on from Brian Kelly, there’s no denying that Kelly made the program relevant again. He led the Fighting Irish to five straight 10-win seasons, and Notre Dame won at least eight games in 11 of his 12 seasons in charge. Kelly left for LSU after surpassing the legendary Knute Rockne as the winningest coach in program history, so fans will expect Freeman to win immediately.
Notre Dame has yet to decide on a starting quarterback. Jack Coan was the go-to guy last year, but it will be either Drew Pyne or Tyler Buchner in 2022. Both Pyne and Buchner saw a decent amount of action last season.
Buchner has the edge as he saw a little more action, and he is a mobile threat. While Pyne is a statue in the pocket, Buchner ran for 336 yards (7.3 YPC) and three touchdowns. He doesn’t have the same polish as a passer, but his other tools mean he will likely get the first crack at the job.
The Fighting Irish will have to replace star running back Kyren Williams too. Williams was one of the top running backs in the country last season, and Chris Tyree and Logan Diggs will be tasked with replacing his production. Fortunately, Notre Dame has a very good offensive line led by All-American center Jarrett Patterson.
This team doesn’t have proven receivers outside of the best tight end in the country. Michael Mayer came up big for Notre Dame time and time again in 2021, finishing the season with 71 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns. Mayer was an All-American, and he is widely expected to be a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Freeman is a defensive mastermind, and he hired an experienced defensive coordinator to be an excellent soundboard in Al Golden. Notre Dame had the 15th ranked defense last year per SP+, and this unit should be solid again even though exceptional safety Kyle Hamilton left South Bend early for the NFL.
The Fighting Irish have a good bit of experience returning in the secondary. All four of the projected starting defensive backs are 6’0, but speed has been an issue against elite wide outs. Additionally, there are currently eight sophomores projected to start, and not everyone is as talented as All-American defensive end Isaiah Foskey.
That means seniors like Jayson Ademilola, Bo Bauer, and Houston Griffith will have to provide a lot of leadership. Depth is an issue in the back seven too, so the Irish can’t afford too many injuries at the second level.
It’s going to be very difficult for Notre Dame to win 10 games for the sixth straight season. The Fighting Irish will be underdogs at Ohio State in their season opener, and they also face North Carolina, BYU, and USC away from home. A showdown with Clemson in late November looms large too, so eight or nine wins sounds right for Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
+4000
If Notre Dame can finish the regular season unbeaten, the Fighting Irish will be in the College Football Playoff. This program is the only non-Power Five school that can make the CFP with a single loss too, and we saw that happen in 2020. However, it’s going to be very difficult for a team with an inexperienced quarterback and a thin back seven to get to 11 wins.
NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS
Tyler Buchner (QB) +10000
Michael Mayer (TE) +10000
Drew Pyne (QB) +12500
Of the quarterbacks, Buchner is definitely the better option to bet to win the Heisman Trophy. He has the potential to be a 3,000-yard passer and a 1,000-yard rusher if he wins the starting job, and those numbers wouldn’t be glossed over at a brand name program like Notre Dame. That might be worth a lottery ticket at 100-1.
While Mayer could definitely be a 1,000-yard receiver in this offense, he is unlikely to be the game breaker that Heisman Trophy voters would need to consider voting for a tight end.
