2022 Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The 2021 season was a role reversal for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. After years of an elite offense carrying a mediocre defense, it was an elite defense that carried a mediocre offense. Oklahoma State ranked in the top five nationally in Defensive SP+, total defense, defensive yards per play, third down defense, and fourth down defense. That led to defensive coordinator Jim Knowles being one of the hottest commodities in the offseason, and Ohio State swooped him up to run its defense.

New defensive coordinator Derek Mason is an excellent replacement for Knowles. Mason has been seen as one of college football’s best defensive minds for the last decade, and Auburn ranked 17th in Defensive SP+ under his watch last season. He won’t have as much talent as Knowles did last season with only four returning starters on this side of the ball for OSU, yet his presence should ensure that the Cowboys don’t fall too far here.

Mike Gundy has led Oklahoma State to a bowl game in 16 straight seasons in Stillwater. The Cowboys have won 10 or more games seven times since 2010, as he has turned this program into one of the best in the Big 12. His offenses have generally been among the best nationally, but he has had trouble getting Spencer Sanders to take his game to the next level.

Oklahoma State had every opportunity to win the Big 12 Championship Game over Baylor last season, but Sanders played an awful game. He averaged 5.6 YPA and threw four interceptions against the Bears. Sanders showed what he can do with an excellent performance in a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, yet Gundy could decide to start over in the middle of the season if Sanders continues to be frustrating with his inconsistency. Garret Rangel was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, and Gunner Gundy has had one year learning this offense.

Dominic Richardson and Texas A&M transfer Deondre Jackson will be the running backs for Oklahoma State now that Jaylen Warren is in the NFL. Richardson and Jackson should have success running behind an offensive line that returns four starters from last season and transfers Casey Collier from USC and Jason Brooks from Vanderbilt.

Top receiver Tay Martin has left Stillwater, but the next four leading receivers from 2021 come back to the Cowboys. Brennan Presley should win all-conference honors if he stays healthy, and there is a good amount of depth at this position.

These defensive ends are excellent, so the defensive line figures to be the strength of the defense. Collin Oliver and Brock Martin both earned All-Big 12 honors in 2021, and Tyler Lacy showed that he can get after the quarterback too. Trace Ford returns after missing last year with an injury, and the middle of the defensive line is solid.

The problem is the back seven as there is only one returning starter at the second level. These linebackers are incredibly raw, and they will need some time to get their footing under Mason. The secondary isn’t as young with Jason TaylorJabbar Muhammad, and Thomas Harper all seeing some action, but opposing quarterbacks could have a lot of success against these defensive backs early in 2022.

Oklahoma State is going to be a double-digit favorite in all three of its non-conference games, so the Cowboys should start the year 3-0. However, they face a tough test on October 1 as they have to travel to Waco to take on Baylor. The schedule makers did Oklahoma State some favors with how this schedule is spaced out, so nine wins feels like the right call for the Cowboys.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS ODDS TO WIN BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

+700

There is some value in Oklahoma State to win the Big 12 at this price. If Sanders can finally take his game to the next level, the Cowboys will have an elite offense to go with an excellent pass rush. It all depends on Sanders though.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+5000

The Cowboys have come close to playing for a national title a few times under Gundy. Oklahoma State has been a very good program over the last two decades, but this team just doesn’t have the depth and talent to seriously compete for a national championship.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS

Spencer Sanders (QB) +8000

If you are considering a bet on Oklahoma State to win the national championship, you would probably be better served betting on Spencer Sanders to win the Heisman Trophy. The Cowboys aren’t going to make the College Football Playoff without Sanders making a huge jump, and it’s more plausible that Sanders will win the Heisman than it is to imagine Oklahoma State beating Alabama, Ohio State, or Georgia.
