2022 UAB Blazers Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 UAB BLAZERS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The Blazers of UAB opened the season 3-1, with the lone loss a 56-7 thumping at Georgia, the eventual national champions. After a 36-12 setback to Liberty, not many envisioned the team's outstanding finish. UAB rattled off a 6-2 conference record, coming up just short against UTSA for the West Division title.

A head-scratching loss at home against Rice was likely the reason the Blazers were not able to make a fourth straight appearance in the CUSA title game while defending its league championship. The Blazers were able to close out the season on a high note with a win over BYU at the Independence Bowl.

UAB heads into this season considered the co-favorites in CUSA play along with UTSA. The only thing that could keep the Blazers from ascending to the heights they want is an uncertain coaching situation. Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent has been thrust into an interim head coaching role for 2022, as head coach Bill Clark had to step away due to a health situation in June.

Now that the bad news is out of the way, let's get to the good news. QB Dylan Hopkins completed 64.2% of his pass attempts for 2,085 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in the regular season while running for five more scores. He missed time in the spring due to an injury, so QBs Bryson Lucero, Dylan Mehrotra and Jacob Zeno will be waiting in the wings if he isn't ready. WR Trea Shropshire (25-682-6) is back after leading the team in yardage.

RB Dewayne McBride (176-1188-12) returns for the Blazers, giving UAB a very balanced offense. RB Jermaine Brown Jr. (115-584-7) is also back, giving this team one of the best one-two punches in CUSA.

On defense, UAB has LB Noah Wilder back in the middle, and LB Jackson Bratton transfers in from Alabama to give this team an embarrassment of riches at the linebacker position. The secondary is also tremendous, and one of the reasons the Blazers will be in the top tier.

The non-conference schedule should be a breeze outside of the Liberty trip in mid-September. UAB also has a late-season trip to LSU in mid-November. This team should likely run the table until at least late October when trips to Western Kentucky and FAU will be daunting, as well as a showdown with UTSA at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, which could very well determine the top seed in the CUSA title game. There is a more than good possibility of this team winning nine games, and you should definitely side OVER.

UAB is considered a co-favorite with UTSA. In the transitioning 11-team Conference USA, the division situation is scrapped, and the top two teams in the league will battle in the title game this season. UAB has a more than good chance to win the title game in its final season before scooting on to the AAC in 2023.
