2022 UConn Huskies Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions
2022 UCONN HUSKIES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW
The Connecticut Huskies made an interesting hire this offseason. UConn brought in Jim Mora to coach the program after Randy Edsall stumbled in his second stint in Storrs. Mora was an offensive assistant for the Huskies last year and took that job after three years out of football. The former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and UCLA Bruins has his work cut out for him as the Huskies were ranked 129th in the country in SP+ in 2021. Their only win came against FCS Yale, and they lost to both FCS Holy Cross and Massachusetts.
Former Penn State quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Huskies. He seemingly won the job during spring practice, as his talent carried the day over the players that had more experience in this program. Roberson didn’t see much playing time during his three years with the Nittany Lions, so he still has a lot to learn.
Nathan Carter is the leading returning rusher. Carter ran for 578 yards and two touchdowns last season, averaging 4.6 YPC. This offensive line is projected to be primarily made up of underclassmen though, so he may have a tough time finding running lanes.
Receiver is one of the few bright spots on this roster. Cameron Ross, Keelan Marion, and Kylish Hicks are all young and talented, and Nigel Fitzgerald transfers in from Old Dominion. That will help an offense that ranked dead last in third down conversion rate in 2021, as the Huskies picked up just 22% of their third down opportunities.
UConn got to the quarterback less often than any other team last season. The Huskies had a total of 12 sacks all year, so that’s something that Mora wants to fix. Don’t be surprised if Mora has this defense take more chances, especially after leading pass rusher Travis Jones was taken in the third round by the Baltimore Ravens in April.
Linebacker Jackson Mitchell is the leader of the defense and recorded 113 tackles last season. The safety tandem is solid, but the Huskies need transfers like Sokoya McDuffie and Marquez Bembry to produce.
The Huskies have just one winnable game in the first half of the season, as they face FCS Central Connecticut State at home. The schedule gets easier over the back half of the year, but teams coached by Mora have a history of checking out after a rough start. That makes the Under the better play at the current price.
