IOWA STATE CYCLONES vs. IOWA HAWKEYES BETTING PREDICTION

The Cyclones and Hawkeyes meet for the 69th time on the gridiron Saturday, and Iowa holds a 46-22 series lead, including each of the past six meetings. Iowa State's last win in the series was a 20-17 victory in Iowa City back on Sept. 13, 2014.

Iowa State was the far more impressive team of the two in the opening weekend of action, posting a 42-10 win over Missouri State of the FCS. While the Cyclones just missed covering the 33.5-point number as the UNDER (54.5) also connected, I-State was able to post 176 rushing yards with 293 passing yards while posting a 26-to-15 advantage in the first downs department. It was a solid performance considering the Cyclones were even in turnover margin.

Now to Iowa - lol. The Cyclones were a complete disaster last week against South Dakota State of the FCS, at least in terms of the offensive production. The defense was stellar, and the reason Iowa won. In fact, technically, the defense outscored the offense, with the Hawkeyes posting not one, but two safeties, and the offense managing just a field goal.

The overall numbers were U-G-L-Y. Iowa had just 10 first downs, 57 rushing yards on 36 carries and 109 passing yards. Iowa also missed a field goal, while losing a fumble with a minus-2 turnover differential.

Score Prediction: Iowa State 23, Iowa 13
Best Bet: Iowa State +160 ML
Best Bet: Iowa State +4 (-110)
Best Bet: UNDER 41 (-115)

IOWA STATE CYCLONES BETTING ANALYSIS

The Cyclones started off quickly, as QB Hunter Dekkers hit WR Xavier Hutchinson not once, not twice, but three times with touchdown passes by the middle of the second quarter last Saturday, quickly posting a 21-0 lead. Missouri State racked up 10 unanswered points late in the second quarter at Jack Trice Stadium to pull within 21-10, but it was all Iowa State in the second half. Dekkers had another TD strike, and the Cyclones tacked on a pair of fourth-quarter scoring runs to put a bow on the scoring.

Iowa State didn't cover last Saturday, missing the number barely, and it is now 1-4 ATS in the past five games overall dating back to last season. Iowa State is also 1-4 ATS in the past five non-conference games, while going 1-7 ATS in the past eight games in the month of September.

For totals, the Cyclones have cashed the UNDER at a 13-3-1 clip in the past 17 games against Big Ten opponents while going 4-1 in the past five games in September. The UNDER is 35-15-2 in the previous 52 games outside of the Big 12, too. Based upon Iowa's defensive effort last week, and awful offense, another UNDER might be right around the corner here.

IOWA HAWKEYES BETTING ANALYSIS

The Hawkeyes were an absolute mess last week, as the offense just couldn't get any rhythm. The defense saved their bacon (mmm, bacon), limiting SDSU to 33 rushing yards on 31 attempts, and a total of 87 passing yards. Iowa recorded four sacks, too, although it was unable to generate any turnovers. Iowa won't be able to rely upon safeties to win Saturday's game against its rival, however.

Iowa has a six-game win streak in this series, and that's in serious jeopardy if the offense can't at least figure out a way to at least be mediocre. It was downright painful to watch last week's game. QB Spencer Petras completed just 44% of his passes, going 11-of-25 for 109 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. RB Leshon Williams was one of the only real bright spots, rumbling 72 yards on 24 carries, although that's still just 3.0 yards per attempt.

Iowa enters this game just 1-4 ATS in the past five games at home, but 9-4-1 ATS in the previous 14 non-conference games. Of course, one of those non-covers was last weekend. It is also 11-5 ATS in the past 16 games following a straight-up win, but last week's performance doesn't give bettors any reason at all to feel confident there is going to be a major bounce back.

The UNDER is 13-6-1 in the past 20 games at home, and 5-1-1 in the past seven tries against Big 12 teams. And the UNDER is 7-0 in the past seven meetings at Kinnick, and 12-3-1 in the previous 16 in this series overall. If there is anything to be confident about, it is certainly the UNDER, even at an extremely low number for this day and age.
