Betting on the Baylor Bears

Playing in the Big 12 as a major college football conference, the Baylor Bears have come into their own in recent years. While always known as a strong regional football program in Texas, Baylor continues to attract national attention from fans and bettors alike.

Baylor Bears Overview

Football at Baylor University in Waco, Texas dates all the way back to 1903. With close to 120 years of tradition on the resume, the Baylor Bears have earned their way into the college football history books.

Playing as an Independent until 1914, the Bears joined the Southwest Conference the following season. Baylor first gained national prominence in the 1950’s with trips to the Orange Bowl (1951), Gator Bowl (1954) and Sugar Bowl (1956).

The team’s highest national ranking during that decade was No. 9 in the 1951 final Associated Press Top 25. George Sauer was the head coach for much of this run.

The next burst into the national spotlight was in the early 1980’s with Grant Teaff serving as the Bears’ head coach. In 1980, Baylor posted a 10-2 regular season record as the No. 14 team in the nation. The Bears went on to lose to Alabama in the 1981 Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day.

The Big 8 grew into the Big 12 with Baylor joining the conference ahead of the 1996 season as one of the new members. Playing with some of the biggest national football programs in the nation, Baylor endured more than a few losing seasons.

The team’s fortunes changed when Art Briles was named head coach of Baylor in 2008. He led the Bears to postseason bowl games six seasons in a row. This run was highlighted by a trip to the 2015 Cotton Bowl as the No. 7-ranked team in the nation.

With head coach Dave Aranda at the helm, the 2021 Baylor Bears were ranked No. 5 in the season-ending AP Top 25.

Natural Big 12 rivalries have formed against Texas, Texas Tech and TCU as other in-state Texas football programs. Baylor also has a heated rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners as one of the most prominent members of the Big 12.

Betting on the Bears is always popular when facing one of these bitter foes. If you wanted to bet on Baylor as a seven-point home favorite against Texas, the Bears would have to beat the Longhorns by eight or more points to win that bet.

Betting on the Baylor Bears in Texas

Texas remains one of the biggest sports markets in the US that has yet to legalize betting on the games. In the case of the Baylor Bears as a popular college football team in Texas, fans can legally bet on their games in states with licensed and regulated sportsbooks. Betting on sports in Texas remains illegal at this time.
