Betting on the Clemson Tigers

The Clemson Tigers have become the pride of the ACC as a major college football conference. The team’s fan base has expanded across the country as a national college football power. Betting on Clemson football is also big business in states with legal sportsbooks.

Clemson Tigers Team Overview

Football at Clemson University in South Carolina dates back to 1902. The team played as an Independent program until 1921 when the Tigers joined the Southern Conference.

As college football grew across the southern states, the Southern Conference was the origin for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Southeast Conference (SEC). Clemson opted to join the ACC in 1953 as a charter member.

Frank Howard remains one of the most famous head coaches at Clemson. His tenure started in 1940 and it lasted all the way until 1969. His best season was 1950 with the Tigers ranked No. 10 in the nation.

The football program’s first national championship was in 1981 behind a perfect 12-0 record. With head coach Danny Ford at the helm, the Tigers won the Orange Bowl that season against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Clemson has been a perennial Top 25 team over the years under the guidance of Tommy West and Tommy Bowden as successful head coaches. The football program gained unparalleled national prominence with the arrival of Dabo Swinney as head coach in 2009.

Since the establishment of the four-team college football playoff in 2014, Clemson has played in four national championships with victories against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2016 and 2018. Swinney’s teams have ended the year ranked No. 10 or lower in six of his last eight seasons.

A natural rivalry has formed in recent years against Alabama. This is in light of the teams’ history against one another on college football’s biggest stage. However, Clemson’s most bitter rival remains the South Carolina Gamecocks. These two in-state foes meet every year in the final game of the season.

If the Tigers were listed as seven-point home favorites against the Gamecocks at a legal sportsbook, they would have to beat their rivals by eight points or more to cover the point spread to win that bet.

Betting on the Clemson Tigers in South Carolina

The Clemson Tigers have grown into a national college football power. The fan base in South Carolina alone is huge. However, betting on Tigers’ football games in that state is illegal. Still steeped in the conservative traditions of the Deep South, this current situation will most likely remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.
