Betting on the Florida Gators

Football and the state of Florida go hand-in-hand across the Sunshine State. Football at the University of Florida remains at the top of the list for a number of fans. This popularity expands out on a national level across the US. So does betting on the Gators during football season as a premier program in the Southeastern Conference or SEC.

Florida would have to be considered one of the premier college football programs in the state of Florida. Dating back to 1911, the Gators also have a long history of success to add to that legacy.

Playing as an Independent until 1921, Florida became part of the Southern Conference the following season. This conference was the starting point for both the SEC and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Playing against rivals such as Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Auburn the SEC became a natural fit for all these teams. The first season of play in this new conference was 1933.

Football at Florida started to pick up steam in the mid-1950’s with regular trips to the Gator Bowl. Two head coaches that stood out during that time frame were Bob Woodruff and Ray Graves. The highest national ranking through the 1960’s was No. 4 in 1968.

Florida’s most successful run as a national power was under the guidance of Steve Spurrier from 1990 until 2001. He led the team to its first national championship in 1996. The Gators would add to more national title runs to the resume in 2006 and 2008 with Urban Meyer as head coach.

Spurrier was also Florida’s first Heisman Trophy winner back in 1996. Following in the footsteps of great quarterbacks to play at this school, Danny Wuerffel won the Heisman in 1996 and Tim Tebow won this award in 2007.

Playing in the SEC has created some great rivalries over the years. Leading the way recently is the Gators’ annual showdown against Georgia. Betting this game draws quite a bit of action on the OVER for the total line.

If the total for that game happened to be set at 55 points, Florida and Georgia would have to score a combined 56 points or more to pay off on the OVER for a total line bet.

Betting in Florida

For a brief time in the fall of 2021, sports betting was legal in Florida. Through an amended gaming compact with the state that was approved on the federal level, the Seminole Tribe offered a mobile sportsbook app.

Numerous challenges to legality of that gaming compact have put the matter into the hands of lawyers and the court system. How this issue will be resolved is still anyone’s guess. For now, the only way to legally wager on Florida football is in states with the proper laws in place.
