Betting on the Oklahoma State Cowboys

As members of the Big 12, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are one of the more popular teams in that major college football conference. Betting on Cowboys’ football is also popular at legal US sportsbooks.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Team Overview

There is a long tradition of college football at Oklahoma State University. The school’s program dates all the way back to 1914 when the Cowboys went 6-2-1 playing as an Independent. They moved to the Southwest Conference the following season.

The Cowboys remained in the SWC until 1925 when they moved to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). In 1960, Oklahoma State joined the Big 8 as that conference’s newest member. Formed in 1928 as the Big 6, this conference was the origin for the Big 8 and later the Big 12 after adding four more teams in 1996.

Oklahoma State’s first postseason appearance was in the 1945 Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day after going 8-1 that season. The Cowboys’ first trip to a bowl game as a member of the Big 8 was in 1974 with an invitation to the Fiesta Bowl that season.

Oklahoma State enjoyed varying degrees of success through the 1980’s and 1990’s under a string of head coaches. The Cowboys’ fortunes took a positive turn in 2005 when Mike Gundy was named head coach of the team.

Dating back to 2006, his teams have played in postseason bowls every season including the 2022 Fiesta Bowl following a 12-2 record in 2021. Oklahoma State was ranked as high as No. 5 during that run and finished ranked No. 7 on the final 2021 Associated Press Top 25.

Playing in the Big 12, Oklahoma State has developed a number of great rivalries over the years. With Texas as a border state, the Texas Longhorns rank high on the list. You could also add the Baylor Bears, Texas Tech Red Raiders and TCU Horned Frogs to the group of Texas-based Big 12 teams.

However, the ongoing rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners has grown into one of the best in college football. These two foes meet every season around Thanksgiving in the final game of the regular season.

Betting on the Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma rivalry attracts quite a bit of attention at legal sportsbooks all across the US. Betting the OVER on the total line is a popular wager.

If the total line happened to be set at 55 points, these two teams would have to score a combined 56 points or more to cash a winner on the OVER.

Betting on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Oklahoma

There is growing support for legal sportsbooks in Oklahoma. However, betting on Big 12 football games is not allowed by current state law. One avenue for change is Oklahoma’s extensive network of land-based tribal casinos.

The gaming tribes’ existing compacts with the state could be amended to add legal sports betting as an option. Until that would take place, Oklahoma State football fans can bet on the Cowboys in states with legal sportsbooks. Online sports betting remains illegal in Oklahoma at this time.
