Cincinnati Bearcats Overview

Cincinnati University does not have one of the oldest football teams in the nation. However, the school can boast a strong tradition of success on the football field.

The Cincinnati Bearcats played their first college football season in 1954. They went 8-2 that season playing as an Independent. The team’s first affiliation with a national conference was in 1957 as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Cincinnati went back to playing as an Independent football program for an extended period of time 1970 to 1995. Ahead of the 1996 season, the Bearcats accepted an invitation to join Conference USA.

As a member of C-USA, the Bearcats qualified for a postseason bowl five times in a span of nine seasons. They spent the next eight seasons in the Big East while continuing their successful run with six more bowl games.

In 2013, Cincinnati became one of the founding members of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). This is where the Bearcats have enjoyed their greatest success on the football field.

Going back over the highlights of Bearcats’ football, they finished the 2009 season ranked No. 8 in the final Associated Press Top 25 with Brian Kelly as head coach. There were 12-1 that year.

More recently, head coach Luke Fickell has built Cincinnati into a national championship contender playing in a Mid-Major conference. In both 2020 (No. 8) and 2021 (No. 4), the Bearcats have been ranked inside the top 10 teams in the nation in the final AP Top 25.

Moving up the ranks, Cincinnati decided to accept an invitation to join the Big 12 as one of college football’s major football conferences. Current AAC members Houston and Central Florida are also moving to the Big 12 to keep these rivalries alive.

Betting the Bearcats as favorites will be a popular option throughout Ohio when legal. If Cincinnati is favored by four points on the college football point spread against Houston, the Bearcats would have to beat the Cougars by five points or more to cash a winning bet.
