Betting on the Liberty Flames

The Liberty Flames are one of the main collegiate sporting attractions in the state as a prominent independent program. Legally betting on the Flames in Virginia is an exciting opportunity for residents.

Overall, Liberty has eight conference titles with a record of 279-248-4. Hugh Freeze is the current coach for Liberty. The Flames are coming off an 8-5 record in 2021. Liberty has a perfect 3-0 record in bowl games. Liberty capped off the 2021 season with a third consecutive bowl victory. The Flames routed Eastern Michigan 56-20 in the LendingTree Bowl.

The Flames are set to join Conference USA during the 2023 football season.

Liberty began in 1973 as an NAIA independent before transitioning to Division II in 1981. The Flames moved up to Division I-AA (the modern-day FCS) in 1988.

Liberty’s best record in NAIA was 9-1 in 1979 under head coach Tom Dowling. In Division II, Liberty only managed one winning season (7-4), which came in 1982.

As an FCS independent, the Flames amassed seven winning campaigns in 14 seasons. The best mark was when they went 9-2 in 1997 under head coach Sam Rutigliano.

Liberty joined the Big South Conference in 2002 and resided there until joining the FBS as an independent in 2018. The Flames were extremely dominant during their run in the Big South. Liberty captured eight conference titles, including four in a row from 2007-2010 and four in five years from 2012-2016. The Flames’ top season was a 10-2 mark in 2008 under head coach Danny Rocco.

Since being a member of the FBS, Liberty has yet to register a losing season. In 2020, Liberty finished with a 10-1 record after edging No. 12 Coastal Carolina 37-34 for an overtime win in the Cure Bowl. The Flames ended the season ranked No. 17.

This season, Liberty will get an SEC challenge in Week 10 when they travel to face Freeze’s former program Arkansas.

A popular way to bet on this contest would be to use the total for combined points scored. This means that if the betting line is 55 points, Liberty and Arkansas would have to score a combined 56 points for the OVER to convert a successful bet.

Notable Liberty players who made it to the NFL include Malik Willis, Walt Aikens, Dwayne Carswell, Samkon Gado, Antonio Gandy-Golden, Eric Green, Wayne Haddix, Rashad Jennings, and James McKnight.

Betting on the Liberty Flames in Virginia

Betting on the Flames at retail sportsbooks in casinos has been legal since January 2021. As of now, Virginia is an online-only betting market. Virginia is slated to open casinos later in 2022 and 2023, so that could signal the beginning of hosting sportsbooks.

The legal sports betting market in Virginia is especially active during the Flames’ season. There’ll be many captivating contests on the schedule, including a home contest vs. in-state Virginia Tech. It’s safe to say that the market should be on fire for the Flames.
