Betting on the Tennessee Volunteers

Since Tennessee’s supreme success in the 1990s, fans and bettors have grasped at every ounce of the Volunteer’s success in hopes that the program is returning to its peak form.

Tennessee Volunteers History

In Knoxville, the Volunteers first made a name for themselves in the 1930s and ‘40s by cracking the top-5 of the AP Poll on several occasions. Fortunately, the program carried that momentum into the ‘50s.

In 1951, the Volunteers capped off its miraculous run with a national championship and #1 ranking despite losing to Maryland in the Sugar Bowl. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, Tennessee continued to enjoy success, often finishing in the AP Top-25 and winning bowl games.

The program has produced its fair share of NFL stars, including Reggie White in the 1980s. In the ‘90s, Peyton Manning and Jamal Lewis shared a backfield and had Tennessee consistently positioned near the top of the polls.

Head Coach Phillip Fulmer took over just before Peyton’s arrival on campus. The season after Manning and Lewis left for the NFL, Fulmer led the Volunteers to a national championship by taking out Bobby Bowden and Florida State.

Although his last few seasons were marred by big losses and off-the-field issues, Phillip Fulmer is widely considered the best to ever don the headset at Tennessee. Since his departure, the Volunteers have struggled to regain any consistent success.

Betting on the Volunteers in Tennessee

Online sports betting is legal in Tennessee and has been live since November 2020. The Volunteer State uniquely offers online betting and not retail betting.

Online betting typically accounts for a vast majority of any state’s revenue, so Tennessee was able to simplify its launch process while accounting for almost all of its customer base.

There are a handful of apps available in the state, including FanDuel and Caesars. More apps are expected to launch in the near future pending approval from the Sports Wagering Advisory Council.

Bettors looking to place a wager on the Tennessee Volunteers football team may find something like this in one of the available sportsbook apps:

-          Tennessee Volunteers +15.5

-          Alabama Crimson Tide -15.5

Here, Tennessee rolls into a matchup with the Tide as 15.5-point underdogs. Bettors backing the Vols need them to win the game outright or lose by fewer than 16 points.

If Alabama were to defeat Tennessee by 16 or more points, the Crimson Tide would cover the spread, and Tennessee bettors would lose their wagers.
