Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers

As a mainstay of Big Ten football, the Wisconsin Badgers remain one of this conference’s favorite teams. However, betting on the Badgers during football season will have to take place outside of Wisconsin in states with legal college betting.

Wisconsin Badgers Team Overview

As one of the oldest programs in the nation, football at the University of Wisconsin in Madison dates back to 1892. After playing as an Independent for four years, the Badgers became members of the Western Conference in 1896.

A few of the other teams in that conference at the time were Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois and Purdue. All six of these football programs were charter members of the Big Ten when that conference was first formed in 1953.

The other four football teams in the original Big Ten that first year were Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State and Indiana.

Wisconsin’s first trip to the Rose Bowl was actually in 1952 during the final season of the Western Conference. The Badgers went 7-3 in 1959 to return to the Rose Bowl as the top team in the Big Ten.

The football program at Wisconsin always had a strong following throughout the Midwest. Head coach Barry Alvarez helped make that a national following in the 1990’s and beyond. His tenure with the team started in 1990 and it ran through the 2005 season.

His best season at the helm was in 1999 when the Badgers ended the year ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press Top 25. They won the Rose Bowl that year by beating Stanford 17-9.

Paul Chryst was named head coach of Wisconsin football in 2015. Two seasons later, the Badgers went 13-1 and they were ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls.

Playing in the Big Ten has formed some great rivalries over the years. As members of the West Division, annual matchups against Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska are always big betting events.

Wisconsin is a popular bet on the college football point spread as a home favorite. If they were favored by seven points against Minnesota, the Badgers would have to win that game by eight or more points to cash a winning ticket.
