Data analysis: The Luckiest Box Office Dress

VegasInsider has created an analysis of all the outfits worn at the premieres by the star actors of the 100+ highest-grossing movies of the past 10 years to find out which outfits and designers are statistically leading to the best box office success.

To be more specific, we have collected the top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood movies of the past 10 years (2014-2024) and then we analyzed over 100 outfits worn at its world premieres by the main female protagonists of those movies - from the colors of dresses to designers and neck jewelry worn at the premieres.

According to the results of the analysis of 102 outfits worn at the premieres of the highest-grossing movies, 93 stars wore a dress (91.2%), while 9 of them (8.8%) wore a different outfit (pantsuit, jumpsuit...). 

COLORS

When looking at the analysis of outfit colors worn at the premieres, black turned out to be the most popular color of a dress worn at the premieres of the highest-grossing movies - 44 outfits were black (29.5%) and collectively, the movies whose main stars were wearing black at the premiere went on to gross 36.5 billion dollars. 

White was the second most popular dress color worn at the premieres (20 dresses, 13.4%), followed by a tie between silver and pink in third place (13 dresses, 8.7%) and blue in 5th place (11 dresses, 7.4%). 

61 stars wore an outfit with only one color (59.8%), while 41 wore outfits that had multiple colors (40.2%).

BRANDS

When looking at the designers / brands of the film premiere outfits, Dior turned out to be the most popular brand worn at the premieres of the highest-grossing movies since it was worn 7 times, namely by: Anya Taylor-Joy (The Super Mario Bros. Movie), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune: Part One), Kristen Bell (Frozen II), Charlize Theron (The Fate of the Furious), Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Jennifer Lawrence, who wore Dior twice (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 &  Part 2). Collectively, the movies whose main stars were wearing Dior at the premiere went on to gross 6.914 billion dollars. 

Alexander McQueen was the second most popular brand worn (6 outfits), followed by Louis Vuitton (5 outfits) and a tie between Givenchy and Valentino (4 outfits).

Stella McCartney, Armani, Georges Hobeika, Versace and Prada were worn 3 times each.

METHODOLOGY

  • In total, 110 movies and 102 outfits were part of the analysis (on 8 occasions, the star actors did not attend the premiere or the premiere was not held, so they were omitted from the analysis)
  • The top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood movies (worldwide) of the past 10 years (2014-2024) were collected from Boxofficemojo, and the outfit colors and designers were collected from Google Images; since 2024 has not concluded, the box office results of the first 8 months of the year were only taken into account
  • Only the outfit worn at the first worldwide premiere of the main female protagonist in a given movie was analyzed
  • If the main female protagonist(s) did not attend the premiere / the premiere did not take place / there was no information regarding their attendance, they were omitted from the analysis
