The MLB teams scoring home runs in the Google Search ballpark
The lockout’s over, spring training is on and the 2022 MLB season is ready to play ball!
As we draw closer to the season, we decided to take a look at which are the most searched MLB franchises across all 50 states in the US. Which team dominates the headspace of fans in California, which franchise is on everyone’s mind in the South and who do they care about most in the East.
We looked at google searches of the last 12 months, to determine the search volume for all MLB franchises and accordingly, created an illustrated map for the same. The results were diverse and some were definitely very surprising.
Teams that transcended state boundaries
One safe assumption is that states home to MLB franchises will be searching for the particular franchise the most. That assumption held true for a few states but was unfounded in other states.
Arizona, for example, is home to the Diamondbacks but the most googled MLB franchise there was the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Milwaukee Brewers were more popular than the Colorado Rockies in Colorado and the New York Yankees had a higher search volume than both the Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays in Florida.
The most searched in most states
The Dodgers and Brewers both were the most googled teams in 11 states - more than any other franchise.
The Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves were the most searched team in seven different states. The Red Sox were of course the most popular in the New England/Northeast region and the Braves in the South.
Battle for state supremacy
In states with multiple franchises, the teams based in more populated cities took the cake.
Dodgers were head and shoulders above the other California teams - Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s and San Diego Padres. Philadelphia Phillies overshadowed the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pennsylvania and the Yankees were more popular than the Mets in New York.
There were a couple of exceptions to this trend - Illinois having an almost equal split between the Cubs and White Sox, and more surprisingly, Minnesota being split between their own Twins and the Brewers.
So, which team was searched for the most?
Taking average monthly searches for all MLB franchises for the last 12 months, the Dodgers were the most googled team in the US. No surprises there.
They were followed by the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Brewers.
The Brewers’ improvement into becoming a major contender for the last few seasons has upped their value, it seems.
Methodology:
- We used google keywords planner to check the average monthly searches for all MLB franchises across all 50 US states
- The time period for this was the last 12 months
