The Astros currently pace the American League West with a record of 61-32, despite owning a lackluster 31-18 record away from Minute Maid Park on the year. The Mariners are 10 games back in the American League West standings with records of 51-42 overall and 24-20 at home on the year.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Betting Prediction

Houston is currently atop the AL West standings and have dominated the competition throughout the season. The Astros played a doubleheader against the Yankees on Thursday and managed to win both matchups. Houston’s bullpen held the Yankees to a combined seven runs and have been one of the best in the league with a WHIP of 1.10 (3rd) and team ERA of 2.99 (2nd). The offense has not been quite as efficient as years past, but have done more than enough with how well the bullpen has pitched. The right-hander Jose Urquidy (8-4, 4.09 ERA) is expected to take the mound Friday.

The Seattle Mariners enter this matchup second in the AL West standings, nine and half games behind the Houston Astros for first place. The Mariners were on a tear prior to the All-Star break, winning 14 straight games. Seattle’s offense was great over that stretch, averaging 5.0 runs per game. The first baseman Ty France has been a big part of that success with a batting average of .308 (97-315), 11 home runs, and 49 RBIs. The bullpen has been on fire as well, allowing opponents 2.42 runs per game over their last 14 games. Southpaw Marco Gonzales (5-9, 3.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mariners Friday.

These teams have met 12 times this season with each team taking six games. I like the value in the Mariners moneyline here. The Astros are coming off a doubleheader and the Mariners Marco Gonzales has pitched well in his two outings against Houston, giving up a combined three runs in 14.1 innings of work. Seattle has also seen success against Jose Urquidy, scoring five runs or more in all three of his starts. Backing the Mariners moneyline here.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners – Current Form

The Astros were tripped up by the Oakland Athletics last Sunday, but grabbed two of two games last Thursday against the Yankees. Their best performance was on Saturday, when they limited the Athletics to scoring no runs in the second contest of a three-game series. Scoring seven runs against the New York Yankees on Thursday’s second game in the series was their best performance in their last five games. Seattle continues to thrive, winning six out of their last six games against the Nationals and the Rangers. In the second contest against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners were in their best form in the last six games, keeping the Washington Nationals at only one run.

The second of four matches on Friday marked an eight-run effort by Seattle against the Texas Rangers, which was their best performance this week.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners – Pitching Matchup

Houston: Jose Urquidy (8-4, 4.09 ERA)

Jose Urquidy takes the mound in the series opener as he makes his 17th start of the season for the Astros in this contest. He comes in 8-4 with a 4.09 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, 20 walks and 74 strikeouts over 94.2 innings of work on the year. Urquidy got assigned the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Oakland Athletics on July 15, 2022. He allowed three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in an eventual 1-5 the Astros defeat. In 10 road starts this season, Urquidy has compiled a 5-2 record in 53.2 innings, while striking out 33, walking nine batters, and putting together a 5.20 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.

Seattle: Marco Gonzales (5-9, 3.50 ERA)

Seattle’ left-hander Marco Gonzales takes the mound for his 18th start of the season. Gonzales looks to improve on a 5-9 record and 3.50 ERA in 100.1 innings, while striking out 53, walking 34 batters, and posting a 1.36 WHIP. The 30-year-old left-hander didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, when the Mariners lost to the Texas Rangers on July 14, 2022 on the road. Gonzales tossed six innings in the 5-6 defeat by the Texas Rangers, while giving up five runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Pitching at home this season, Gonzales is 3-4 with a 3.21 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, 15 walks and 26 strikeouts over 53.1 innings in nine starts.
