Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies Betting Prediction

The Atlanta Braves have clinched a wild card berth but are still in contention to win the division as they are one game behind the New York Mets for first place of the NL East. The Braves won two of three in their most recent series against the Nationals and have won six of their last 10 games. Atlanta has been one of the hottest teams in the second half of the season and have put themselves in a good position to make a run in the playoffs. The offense has been solid this season with a batting average of .254 (8th), on base percentage of .318 (9th), slugging percentage of .444 (2nd) and have scored 731 total runs (3rd). Atlanta’s bullpen has been a nice compliment to their productive offense with a WHIP of 1.19 (8th) and team ERA of 3.45 (5th). Braves ace Max Fried (13-6, 2.52 ERA) is expected to start Thursday.

The Philadelphia Phillies are currently 12.5 games behind the New York Mets for first place of the division, but their playoff hopes are still alive as the Phillies hold a two and a half game lead over the Brewers for the third NL Wild Card spot. Philadelphia lost one of two games in their most recent series with the Blue Jays and have lost six of their last 10 games. The offense has been consistent throughout the season with a batting average of .255 (7th), on base percentage of .318 (9th), slugging percentage of .426 (5th) and have scored 694 total runs (7th). Their bullpen allowed 18 runs to Toronto Tuesday night and have been up and down this season with a WHIP of 1.25 (12th) and team ERA of 3.97 (18th). Southpaw pitcher Ranger Suarez (9-5, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Phillies Thursday.

I like the Braves in game one of this series with their ace taking the mound. Not only that, but the Braves have been far more consistent in the second half of the season than the Phillies have been. There is not bad value in the Braves moneyline here, but I do think playing the runline here is worth it here for the extra juice.

Fried looks to improve on a 13-6 record and 2.52 ERA in 175.1 innings, while striking out 159, walking 31 batters, and posting a 1.01 WHIP. Fried didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on September 16, 2022. In his 11 starts on the road this season, Fried is 6-2 with a 2.60 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, six walks and 64 strikeouts over 72.2 innings of work.
