CLEVELAND GUARDIANS vs. NEW YORK YANKEES BETTING PREDICTION

Cleveland took down the Tampa Bay Rays in two games over the weekend to advance to the ALDS. The Guardians managed to do so with just three runs scored combined over the two games. The bullpen allowed just one run in game-one and pitched a shutout in game-two. While it is a great sign that the bullpen looked great, the lack of offense is a bit concerning considering how high scoring of a team the Yankees are. To try and beat New York in a five-game series with just their bullpen is not going to happen, they need production from their offense as well. The right hander Cal Quantrill (15-5, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to start game-one.

The Yankees enter this matchup as AL East division champions. While they fell a hair short of 100+ wins, New York still had one heck of a season. The Yankees finished the regular season with a 12-5 SU record over their last 17 games. The offense is arguably the best in the entire league and has tremendous power from top to bottom. Their bullpen has also been fantastic. Not just in terms of starting pitchers, but their depth will be crucial throughout this postseason as well. Although, Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman has been ruled out for the ALDS after missing a mandatory workout, so he is no longer an option. Right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole (13-8, 3.50 ERA) is expected to take the mound Tuesday.

I like the Yankees in game-one of this series. I do not see the Guardians putting up many runs after watching them over the weekend. They are not a home run hitting team so they will have to work for their runs which could be tough against Cole. Also, Cleveland reliever Nick Sandlin will be out the remainder of the postseason with a shoulder strain which is a huge loss for the Guardians. No value in the MoneyLine here so will be playing the Yankees runline here.

Score Prediction: Yankees 5, Guardians 2
Best Bet: Yankees -1.5 (+110)

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS BETTING ANALYSIS

Cleveland is 94-70 SU and 87-77 ATS this season. The Guardians are 5-1 SU in their last six games and 9-0 SU in their last nine games on the road. Going against these trends, Cleveland is 1-5 SU in their last six games against the Yankees. The total has gone over in six of their last eight games. Following this trend, the total has gone over in four of their last five when playing on the road against New York.

The Guardians offense has been a bit up and down throughout the season in terms of production. As a team during the regular season Cleveland had a batting average of .254 (7th), on base percentage of .316 (12th), slugging percentage of .383 (21st) and scored 698 runs (T-15th). The right fielder Oscar Gonzalez was the only Guardian to have more than two hits in the Wild Card round, going 3-9 with one home run and one RBI. Third baseman Jose Ramirez was great on the defensive side of the ball and went 2-10 with one home run and two RBIs over the weekend.

As seen in the Wild Card round, Cleveland’s bullpen is exceptionally good. Throughout the season they allowed opponents a batting average of .230 (6th), had a WHIP of 1.16 (5th), and team ERA of 3.46 (6th). Right-handed pitcher Quantrill is expected to start on Tuesday. Quantrill went 15-5 with an ERA of 3.48 this season and gave up 178 hits, 70 earned runs, and struck out 128 batters in 176.2 innings of work. In his one outing against the Yankees this season, Quantrill gave up six hits and three runs in 6.1 innings.

NEW YORK YANKEES BETTING ANALYSIS

The Yankees finished the regular season 99-63 SU and 72-90 ATS. New York is 12-5 SU over their last 17 games and 9-2 SU in their last 11 games at home. The total has gone over in 13 of their last 20 games against Cleveland and four of their last five when playing at home against Cleveland. Going against these trends, the total has gone under in four of their last five games.

New York’s offense had a league leading 254 home runs this season while the Guardians had the second lowest home runs hit with 127. The Yankees offense has been dominating all season with a batting average of .241 (15th), on base percentage of .325 (5th), slugging percentage of .426 (4th) and scored 807 runs (2nd). Center fielder Aaron Judge has been the best offensive player in the league with a batting average of .311 (177-570), 62 home runs, and 131 RBIs. Expect the Yankees to have their bats working against the Guardians in game-one.

The Yankees bullpen hit a bit of a speed bump after returning from the All-Star break but appear to be fully back and ready to go. As a team they allowed opponents a batting average of .219 (3rd), had a WHIP of 1.12 (3rd), and team ERA of 3.30 (3rd). The right-hander Cole is scheduled to start Tuesday. Cole went 13-8 with an ERA of 3.50 this season and gave up 154 hits, 78 earned runs, and struck out 257 batters in 200.2 innings of work. In his two starts against the Guardians this season, Cole gave up a combined seven hits and two runs in 12.2 innings.
