Sports jerseys are a special part of being an athlete and a fan. Jerseys unify more than just the team, but the entire community that supports them. 

Sporting your team colors is part of the fabric of being a fan. It’s a symbol of identity, where certain colors have become synonymous with teams. For legendary teams like the New York Yankees, their team colors and pinstripes have become part of their iconography – representing the tradition and heritage of sports heroism through decades of success and pride. 

It’s this enduring love and legacy that takes sports jerseys out of the stadium and into everyday fashion. These days, it’s common to see sports jerseys and merchandise in mainstream clothing stores, and more recently, on the runway – filtering into high-fashion and women’s fashion trends. Meanwhile, with the rise of throwback fashion trends, designer jerseys recall the nostalgia of 90’s fashion. 

Here at Vegas Insider, we wanted to know which teams dominate the game when it comes to fashion trends and fan engagement. 

Read on to explore the most popular teams as we uncover which sports heroes have the most fashionable fans. We’ll dive into data revealing just how popular the top NFL, NBA, and MLB teams are, analyzing their search and social media activity to find out whose merch comes out on top.

Top Sports Fashion Trends

While the best sports jersey in the country might be a matter of opinion, our data says otherwise. 

To find the icons of athletic fashion, we ranked each sports team in the NFL (National Football League), NBA (National Basketball Association) and MLB (Major League Baseball) based on a range of factors. 

We analyzed their popularity through their online team jersey, merchandise and fashion traffic, as well as the overall interest in designer fashion in the team’s state. We then considered how many fans show off their jerseys on Instagram. Here’s what we found:

The Top 3 Most Popular Jerseys

According to our data, the most popular sports apparel is dominated by Californian teams – the LA Dodgers, LA Lakers, and the San Francisco 49ers. The LA Dodgers clinched the title of the most popular team merch, while LA Lakers fans were the most active on Instagram with 42,785 fan photos. 
Fashion-conscious California is known for producing some of the top sports teams in the country. The San Diego Padres and the Golden State Warriors were also among the top 20 most fashionable teams, ranking 7th and 13th respectively. The Golden State also has the highest search traffic for designer brands, with an average of 12.3 million searches leading designer brands.

Champion Style Icons - In The Running

As we rattle through the top 20 most popular teams and jerseys, the NFL was the most popular league, with nine teams commanding overall rankings. Among the nine NFL teams, Pennsylvania stood out as the most fashionable state, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles ranking 12th and 20th respectively.

Meanwhile, six NBA teams and five MLB teams fought for a position among the most fashionable teams in the U.S.

  • Ranking 4th, Dallas Cowboys jerseys were the most popular overall, with a total search volume of 1.9 million. 
  • Fans of the Detroit Lions were most interested in team merchandise, outperforming all teams with a total search volume of 1.2 million.
  • Ranking 9th, the fashion appeal of the Kansas City Chiefs is undeniable. Boasting the highest team fashion traffic, the Chiefs dominate online queries with 866,140 searches between 2024 and 2025. 

We’ve covered the most popular team jerseys, but which team fell flat among fans and the public? With only 246 fan photos on Instagram and low team fashion traffic, the Portland Trail Blazers were the team with the least fashionable merchandise across the board. 

Most Fashionable NFL Teams

With an average index score of 25.01 out of 100, the NFL was the most popular league for sports fashion out of all three leagues. 

According to our data, the top 10 most popular NFL team jerseys to wear are:

  1. San Francisco 49ers
  2. Dallas Cowboys
  3. Detroit Lions
  4. Kansas City Chiefs
  5. Pittsburgh Steelers
  6. Green Bay Packers
  7. Buffalo Bills
  8. Miami Dolphins
  9. Philadelphia Eagles
  10. Los Angeles Rams

Each with two teams in the top 20, California and Pennsylvania are the most fashionable states for sports merchandise. The San Francisco 49ers come out on top with an impressive online presence and social buzz, attracting 1.7 million searches and 7,763 posts on Instagram. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers lead with the most fan posts on Instagram at 7,964. 

When it comes to the most popular sports jerseys, Dallas Cowboys jerseys are fan favorites – leading search queries with a total of 1.9 million. 

As for merchandise, the Detroit Lions come out on top. The Lions attract the most searches for team merch with 1.2 million between 2024 and 2025. 

Despite winning two Super Bowls, the Philadelphia Eagles only rank 9th for the most fashionable in the league. With only 221,300 online searches, Eagles jerseys are the least popular out of the top 10. 

And lagging behind in online merch and fashion traffic, trends show that the Indiana Colts haven’t quite captured the same interest as the rest of the league. Scoring 3.6 out of 100, the Indiana Colts are the least fashionable team in the NFL.

Most Fashionable NBA Teams

Earning an average score of 20.59 out of 100, we looked at which NBA teams are the most fashion-forward in the U.S. 

The top 10 NBA teams with the most popular apparel include: 

  1. Los Angeles Lakers
  2. New York Knicks
  3. Boston Celtics
  4. Golden State Warriors
  5. Chicago Bulls
  6. Dallas Mavericks
  7. Sacramento Kings
  8. Cleveland Cavaliers
  9. Miami Heat
  10. San Antonio Spurs

NBA jerseys have become one of the most popular fashion trends, shifting beyond supporting your team on game day to wearing team jerseys for everyday attire. Fans around the world still buy and wear their favorite players’ jerseys – whether it’s the iconic Chicago Bulls Jordan 23 jersey, LA Lakers heroes LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or Magic Johnson, or Celtics legend Larry Bird. 

And thanks to the cultural influence of Nike Air Jordans, sports fashion extends beyond team merchandise too. 

Fans love a trailblazer, which is clear to see in our rankings. Sat among our top 10 most fashionable teams are the five most successful teams in NBA history – the Boston Celtics, LA Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs. 

While the LA Lakers lead the charge for most social buzz, the most popular team jersey is the Boston Celtics, attracting significant online traffic with 1.2 million searches on average. 

Meanwhile, merchandise for the New York Knicks receives the most attention overall, with Knicks merch drawing 401,130 searches across the year. 

Most Fashionable MLB Teams

Boasting an average index score of 22.24 out of 100, the top 10 most fashionable MLB teams include:

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers
  2. San Diego Padres
  3. San Francisco Giants
  4. New York Yankees
  5. Houston Astros
  6. Detroit Tigers
  7. Chicago Cubs
  8. New York Mets
  9. Oakland Athletics
  10. Texas Rangers

When it comes to Major League Baseball, California, New York and Texas lead the top 10 with the most influential merchandise. California secures four teams in the ranking, while New York and Texas feature two. 

Despite being the most successful franchise of all time, the New York Yankees only rank 4th for most fashionable. In fact, the most popular team jersey belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers, with an average search volume of 1.2 million. 

The Dodgers also clinch the most popular MLB apparel, with over one million searches for Dodgers merchandise across the year. Likewise, Detroit Tigers fashion apparel is in high demand, attracting more than 71,500 online queries. 

Sat among the top three most popular teams, the San Francisco Giants draws the most Instagram activity across the league with more than 4,300 fan photos posted online. 

Meanwhile, fashion appeal for the Washington Nationals falls under the radar as the least fashionable among fans. Fans of the Washington Nationals were also the least interested in designer brands.

Most Fashionable Teams in Nevada

Taking the privileged title of being the only team to play in the Super Bowl across the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 2000s, the Las Vegas Raiders have a memorable history in the NFL. 

Reflecting their sports heritage, the Raiders are popular among NFL fans. Ranking 18th among the top 20 most fashionable NFL teams, they have the highest social media activity in the league. 

More than 10,000 passionate Raiders fans have posed with their jerseys on Instagram – more so than fans of the San Francisco 49ers, who lead as the most fashionable NFL team overall. This shows that while they may not rule the ranks, Raiders fans light up their social community with their unwavering pride.

Methodology

This dataset contains three rankings, one with all NFL teams, another with all NBA teams and one with all MLB teams, based on how fashionable their fans are. To do this, five different factors were used. Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalized, to provide each factor with a score between 0 and 1. If data was not available, a score of 0 was given. The normalized values were then summed and multiplied, to give each team a total score out of 100. The teams were then ranked from highest to lowest, based on their total scores.  

The factors used are as follows:

  • Team Jersey Search Volume - The number of searches in each teams' respective country, for the prompt "X Jersey", where X is the team name. Between Mar 24 - Feb 25.
  • Team Fashion Search Volume - The total number of searches in each teams' respective country, for the prompts: "X fashion", "X drip", "X style", "X outfit" & "X fan gear", where X is the team name. Between Mar 24 - Feb 25.
  • Team Merch Search Volume - The total number of searches in each teams' respective country, for the prompts: "X merchandise", "X hats", "X bags", "X hoodies" & "X vintage jerseys", where X is the team name. Between Mar 24 - Feb 25.
  • Fan Photos - The total number of posts on Instagram that have the hashtag 'Xjersey' or 'Xjerseys', where X is the teams' nickname i.e. Mets instead of New York Mets.
  • State Designer Fashion Search Volume - The total number of searches in each teams' respective state (province for Canadian teams) for the prompts: "Chanel", "Dior", "Gucci", "Louis Vuitton" & "Prada". Between Mar 24 - Feb 25.

The factors were indexed as follows:

  • All Factors - Higher is better.
