NBA: Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview, Prediction

The Boston Celtics (39-16) take on the host Philadelphia 76ers (20-34) in an Atlantic Division matchup on Thursday night (7 p.m. ET). 

This is the first game for both teams since the All-Star break. The long-time rivals are going in opposite directions recently. 

The Celtics are second in the Eastern Conference and 8-2 in their last 10 games. Meanwhile the 76ers (No. 11 in the East) are on a five-game losing streak and on the bubble for the play-in. 

Joel Embiid (24.9 points) and Tyrese Maxey (27.6 points) are a superb duo for the 76ers. When they’re in sync, the opposition has its hands full.

However, the Celtics are clicking on all cylinders and one of the most complete squads in the league. Boston is fourth in offensive rating (118.8) and fifth in defensive rating (109.6) in large part because of stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. 

The 76ers will have trouble stopping the Celtics from beyond the arc. Boston needs just 24 more 3-pointers to reach 1,000 this season. The Celtics average an astounding 17.7 made 3-pointers per game. 

Boston is 16-1 this season when converting at least 20 3-pointers. Interestingly, that lone loss was a 118-114 defeat to the 76ers on Christmas. 

The Celtics bounced back in the next meeting to beat the 76ers 118-110 in Philadelphia on Feb. 2. 

The 76ers are in the bottom third of the league in offensive rating (22nd) and defensive rating (23rd). 

Figure on this being a grind it out affair with limited possessions. The Celtics and 76ers are 26th and 27th respectively for pace. 

Also both teams are heavily reliant on isolation offense with their stars. The Celtics are 21st and the 76ers are 28th in assist percentage. 

The Celtics are 28-9 vs. conference opponents. The 76ers are 14-20 in games vs. the East. 

The Celtics are favored by 7.5 points and the total is set for 223.5 at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s Celtics -310 and 76ers +250. 

The Celtics probably won't catch the Cleveland Cavaliers for the top spot in the conference. However, Boston is picking up steam down the stretch and that’ll continue vs. the 76ers. 

The Celtics will cover the spread and handle the 76ers for a fourth consecutive victory.
