Bucks vs Pacers Picks & Prediction

The Bucks were behind the 8-ball from the jump in this series with Giannis Antetoukounmpo sidelined with a calf injury for (at least) the first two matchups – and as of Saturday afternoon, there’s still no clear timetable for his return, as the latest update stated Giannis still hasn’t added running or cutting to his recovery routine.

For the first 24 minutes of this series, however, it looked like the absence of Antetokounmpo might not be much of a problem for Milwaukee, because it was Dame Time early and often for the Bucks, as Damian Lillard erupted for 35 points on 11-of-19 from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half of Game 1 to give his team a 69-42 lead at the break.

The Bucks managed to hold on for a 109-94 victory in Game 1. But it wasn’t exactly a cakewalk, as the Pacers won the second half by a 12-point margin and Lillard disappeared into the night with zero points on 0-of-5 from the field in the second half – which wasn’t a huge concern heading into Game 2. But at this point, it isn’t a great sign for Milwaukee.

Game 2 was a similar story for the Bucks. This time around, however, Dame’s disappearing act actually costed them, as Lillard went off for 26 points on 58% from the floor and 55% from 3-point range in the first half of Tuesday’s contest, and then took his foot off the gas pedal again down the stretch with just 8 points on 33% from the field and zero successful long range attempts in the second half – resulting in a 125-108 home loss.

In Game 3, however, Milwaukee appeared to be dead in the water early. But finally, it was Dame Time late in a big game. Lillard scored 9 points on 20% shooting in the first half, and then bounced back with 19 points on 40% from the field and 50% from 3-point range in the second half, which helped the Bucks erase a 22-point deficit after the midway break and send the game to overtime – but unfortunately, Dame suffered a calf strain in the process and is now listed as doubtful for Game 4.

Khris Middleton was phenomenal in Game 3 for Milwaukee. He scored 42 points on 16-of-29 (55%) from the field and buried a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer in regulation, and then accomplished an eerily similar feat to tie the game with less than 10 seconds on the clock in OT. Unfortunately, however, it was immediately negated by a last-second bucket from Tyrese Haliburton on the following possession. So, even on Middleton’s best night, the Pacers still managed to escape with the win in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

The Bucks are 18-21 since hiring Doc Rivers as their head coach back in January, which includes a 1-2 split in the playoffs – and there hasn’t been much to feel good about during that time frame, especially in the absence of Antetokounmpo, considering they rank 18th in offensive rating and 15th in defensive rating in their last 39 games – and most of those games were played with the 2-time MVP in the lineup.

If Giannis and Dame were healthy, this series would be a completely different story, especially given the offensive sparks Lillard has provided thus far – but Middleton can’t do it all by himself, and if Giannis is also unable to shoulder the scoring load in the imminent future, the Bucks are in trouble. I’ll lay the points with Indiana.
