Bucks vs Pacers Picks & Prediction

The vast majority of people (myself included) immediately started digging a grave for this Milwaukee team when Giannis Antetokoumpo went down with a calf injury in the waning days of the regular season – and then, when Damian Lillard went down with an Achilles injury of Game 3 in this series, we started digging a little bit faster as it seemed like the Bucks may be eliminated even quicker than we originally anticipated.

But, who needs Giannis and Dame when you have Khris and Bobby, right?

With their backs up against the wall in the most recent meeting between these two teams, the Bucks finally managed to bounce back from three straight losses with a dominant 115-92 home win in Game 5, which was propelled by 29 points apiece on a combined 23-of-44 (52%) from the field from Khris Middleton and Bobby Portis for Milwaukee.

All five Bucks starters scored 12+ points, and they shot 52% from the floor and 38% from 3-point range as a team. It was a tremendous outing for Milwaukee. However, my biggest takeaway from Game 5 was the Pacers’ inability to contain the Bucks’ offense in the absence of Milwaukee’s top two scoring threats.

Indiana’s flaws at the defensive end of the floor are certainly no secret, and that’s been the case for quite some time. At this point, however, simply saying Indiana’s defense is “flawed” may be a bit of an understatement, because this team can’t guard anybody. The Pacers ranked 27th in points allowed (120.2) and 24th in defensive rating (118) during the regular season, and it’s been just as bad in five playoff games against an extremely short-handed Bucks offense, as Indiana ranks 15th out of 16 playoff teams in both points allowed (112.6) and defensive rating (118.1) so far this postseason.

As bad as their defense has been though, Indiana should still be able to close out this series without too much of a problem in Game 6. The common phrase usually goes, “sometimes the best defense is great offense,” and the Pacers live-and-die by that particular mantra – also ranked 1st in points scored (123.3) and 2nd in offensive rating (121) on the year.

The wide discrepancy between the Pacers’ offensive and defensive production certainly makes them vulnerable moving forward, but Indiana’s offense has been good enough to single-handedly carry them through the finish line of this round, especially if Giannis and Dame do not return at any point.

However, I will not be picking a side in Game 6. Instead, my best bet targets the total. The first two matchups of this series in Indianapolis cruised over the total set for Thursday’s contest at an average of 239 total points, with both teams scoring 111+ points in regulation of both games.

The Pacers offense should be much better at home in Game 6, however, their defense will not be, which is worrisome when laying such a big number on the spread. I’ll take the over.

Pick: Over 215.5 (-110)
