Cavaliers vs Celtics Picks & Prediction

The latest meeting between these teams felt like one last hurrah for the Cavaliers. With Cleveland teetering on the ropes down 2-1 heading into Game 4, the Cavaliers gave Boston everything they could possibly handle in front of the Cleveland home crowd this past Monday, despite all hope appearing to be lost in the absence of Donovan Mitchell. The Cavaliers led by a score of 65-64 at the 8:42 mark of the third quarter and trailed by just five points as the clock struck the 2-minute mark in the fourth quarter of Monday’s contest, before ultimately losing the game by a score of 109-102 to fall to a 3-1 deficit in the series.

From the outside looking in, let’s be honest, none of us gave the Cavs much of a chance in this series. But they did manage to steal a game in Boston, and like any decent team with a playoff-pulse, I’m sure they convinced themselves, “Hey, who knows? Anything could happen,” if they could steal a swing game in Game 4 to even up the series at 2-2 as opposed to needing three straight wins (two on the road) down 3-1.

Any way you slice it, this series was pretty much over before it even started. Boston’s back-ups could beat these guys (mostly kidding). The Celtics lead the entire NBA in 3-point attempts per game (42.5), and they knock them down at the second-best clip (38.8%), which equates to the best offensive rating (123.2) in the league by a considerable margin and the second-highest scoring average at 120.6 points per game. Not to mention, they also rank 3rd in team defensive rating (111.6), which falls directly behind the Magic (111.3), who just held the Cavaliers to 95.9 points per game on 44% from the field and 29% from 3-point range in a lengthy seven-game series in the previous round.

However, now it’s really over with Cleveland needing three straight wins, and I expect to see Game 5 of this series play out similarly to how it played out for Miami in the previous round, which would be for the Cavs to punt on their minuscule chance of a comeback and break the huddle with “1, 2, 3, Cancun!” to start Game 5, followed by a stroll to their ugliest loss of the series – and quite honestly, I don’t blame them if they do. It’s a wrap. Make it stop. Nobody wants to see a sixth meeting between these teams, especially with Mitchell either sidelined or less than 100% healthy.

The Celtics posted an average point differential of +18 in their first three wins over Miami in the previous round, and then blew the doors off the Heat by a score of 118-84 (+34) in Game 5, which was arguably Miami’s worst offensive and defensive performance of the entire series. The Cavs may be destined to usurp a similar fate after posting an average point differential of -15 in their first three losses of this series. I’ll lay the points with Boston in Game 5.

Pick: Celtics -15.5 (-110)
