NBA Finals Game 4 Prediction & Picks

This year’s NBA Playoffs have been pretty uneventful for the most part, and the championship series has been no exception through three games…

The average series length throughout this year’s postseason was 5.5 games heading into the NBA Finals – and now, with Dallas teetering on the brink of elimination down three-games-to-none, the Mavs are in danger of sinking that number even lower with a fourth straight loss in Game 4.

Hand up, I was one of the fools that originally believed Dallas had a puncher’s chance to win this series at +184, and the Mavs are simply no match for this Boston team. However, the aspect of this series that’s surprised me the most has been the consistent dominance of the Celtics’ defense over the Dallas offense, as opposed to the usual scoring showcase that we are accustomed to seeing from a Celtics team that averaged over 120 points per game during the regular season, and 110+ points per game throughout the playoffs.

The Celtics led the NBA in offensive rating by a comfortable margin during the regular season (123.2), and they’ve continued to do so throughout the playoffs at a league-best offensive rating of 119.3 since the start of the postseason. However, the Celtics offense hasn’t had its best stuff over the course of this series, averaging only 106 points per game on a 116 offensive rating in the NBA Finals. But, it’s still been more than enough to get them over the hump for three straight wins over Dallas thanks to their dominance at the defensive end of the floor, as they managed to hold the Mavs to less than 100 points in all three games on a miserable offensive rating of 104.3.

The first three matchups of this series all stayed well under the total at a combined average of 201.3 points per game, with the most recent meeting serving as the highest-scoring of the bunch at a final score of 106-99 in Game 3, which still came in eight points under the point total of 213.5 set for the affair. So, it’s no surprise to see the over-under fall a few more points once again, down to a total of OU 211.5 ahead of Game 4; after opening at 216 in Game 1, a quick downtick to 214 in Game 2, and then a similar bar of 213.5 set for Game 3.

This number is still too high. I’ll take the under in Game 4.
