NBA: Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics Preview, Prediction

The Dallas Mavericks (26-25) wrap up a five-game road trip when they take on the host Boston Celtics (36-15) on Thursday night (7:30 p.m. ET).

This is the second and final regular season meeting between these two teams that met in the 2024 NBA Finals. The Celtics beat the Mavericks 122-107 on Jan. 25 behind a combined 69 points from Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Jaylen Brown

Newly acquired 10-time All-Star center Anthony Davis is questionable with an abdominal strain he suffered Jan. 28 while still with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks dealt franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic in the stunning trade for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team member.

P.J. Washington (personal), Caleb Martin (trade pending), and Dereck Lively (ankle) are all out for the Mavericks.

Whether Davis plays or not will be key to the Mavericks’ chances against the defending NBA champions. Davis has averaged 29.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in his last four contests vs. the Celtics.

Having Davis on the floor would significantly boost the Mavericks’ ability to control the paint on both ends.

The Mavericks are on a three-game losing streak after dropping games at the Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, and most recently the Philadelphia 76ers

Kyrie Irving (24.5 points, 4.8 assists) has to be the best player on the court for the Mavericks to have any chance to snap their skid. Irving is playing at a high level right now, coming off 34 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the loss at the 76ers.

A key for the Celtics is to limit the contributions of Mavericks center Daniel Gafford. The solid starter has amassed a double-double in three of his last five games and is fourth in the NBA in field goal percentage (69.9).

The Celtics are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

The balanced Celtics are third in Adjusted Net Rating (+8.1), fielding the No. 3 offense and No. 6 defense. However, the Celtics are 20-30-1 against the spread. The Celtics are 16-9 at home. Yet, the Celtics have a 9-16 mark as a home favorite against the spread.

The Mavericks have to particularly contain Brown and White.

Brown has scored at least 20 points in five of the last six games for the Celtics. White has tallied 20+ points in three of the last five games and drained 6 3-pointers in the Celtics’ 112-105 victory at the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The lone Celtic questionable to play is Jrue Holiday (shoulder).

The Celtics are 10-point favorites and the total is set for 229.5 points at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s +375 Mavericks and -500 Celtics.

Whether the Mavericks have Davis in the lineup or not, Irving will muster enough for them to cover in a narrow loss.

PICK: Mavericks + 10.0
