Knicks vs 76ers Picks & Prediction

You know what they say, the series doesn’t truly begin until a road team wins a game – and so far, the home team is a perfect 3-0 in the first three matchups of this series. So which team is going to be the first to break the chain?

Based on the swings we’ve seen so far, I would say the Sixers have a much better shot at winning a road game in this series than the Knicks.

After a pair of heartbreaking losses in the first two matchups of this series in the Big Apple, the Sixers finally returned to the Wells Fargo Center for Game 3 on Thursday night – and they won by largest margin of any matchup in the series so far, as Philadelphia erupted for 125 points on 55% from the floor and 48% from 3-point range on the way to a 125-114 victory to cut down New York’s lead to 2-1.

We all know how it goes in the playoffs. At home, role players tend to step up and provide their team with an additional boost as they feed off the frantic energy. The hometown crowd shouts and boos at every foul call in favor of the opposing team regardless of whether or not the call was accurate -- which is why we call it homecourt advantage, and it is a real thing.

However, the most encouraging part of the Sixers’ latest win was the consistent whistle they received from the referees throughout the game on their homefloor.

The Sixers rank 4th in the league in free throw attempts per game and the Knicks rank 16th, which is no fluke given Embiid’s prowess at getting to the line, as opposed to the guards and wings carrying most of the scoring load for New York. But every time the Sixers tried to extend their lead at MSG, the Knicks were bailed out by ticky tack fouls that were not being called both ways, highlighted by NYK shooting 20 free throws in the first half of Game 1 compared to just 10 for the Sixers.

And then in Game 2, the Knicks finished with the free throw advantage yet again (23-22), giving them two straight outlier results in their favor – and two that weren’t actually warranted either according to NBA Officiating Last Two Minute Report. Maxey was officially deemed to be fouled twice in the closing seconds of the Knicks’ victory in Game 2, which should’ve given the Sixers the upper hand in the free throw department, and subsequently, a one-game lead in the series following the events of Thursday.

In Game 3, however, the Philly Faithful was in the building, and they certainly let the referees know how they felt about the way the first two matchups of the series were officiated, and the Sixers finally saw some calls go their way as a result. Philadelphia went to the line for 33 free throws in Game 3; New York shot 19. Admittedly, the pendulum might’ve swung a little bit too far toward the Sixers’ direction in their most recent meeting, but it was much closer to the expected free throw differential for a matchup between these two teams, and a much-needed overcorrection in the aftermath of the Game 2 debacle.

Quite frankly, I’m not sure if either team is capable of winning a road game in this series. But we saw the Sixers get close twice, with an average point differential of -5 at MSG in Games 1 and 2 – and then at home in Game 3, they ran away with a double-digit victory.

Sometimes it’s better to be “lucky” than “good” – and in the first two matchups of this series, the Knicks were incredibly lucky to escape with wins, which may ultimately be the deciding factor in this series. However, I still believe the Sixers are the better team in this matchup, and they reminded us of that once again with a commanding home victory in Game 3.

If the referees call the same fouls both ways and Embiid manages to maintain his current health status, the Sixers should be able to win the rest of their remaining home games in this series with relative ease. Stealing one at MSG is going to be the hard part for Philly.
