Knicks vs 76ers Picks & Prediction

Here we go again. As soon as I think I’m out, they pull me right back in…

As far as I’m concerned, the Philadelphia 76ers should be home on their couch watching Doc Rivers try to fend off elimination by the Pacers on Thursday. Instead, however, the Sixers travel home for Game 6 against the Knicks, and the only reason they find themselves alive to see another day in this series is because of Tyrese Maxey’s performance on Tuesday night.

On the brink of elimination in Game 5, seven-of-eight guys in the Sixers’ rotation looked like they had reservations in Cancun for this weekend, especially Joel Embiid. Excluding Maxey, the Sixers scored just 66 points on 25-of-61 (40.9%) from the field and 8-of-27 (29.6%) from 3-point range in Tuesday’s contest – and although he finished with a triple-double, Embiid was truly awful, as the reigning MVP scored just 19 points on 37% shooting and turned the ball over nine times (four turnovers in fourth quarter). Which, to put into perspective, is just two turnovers shy of his total in the first four games of this series combined (11).

For whatever reason though, Maxey was the only guy who didn’t get the invite to the team vacation, so he did everything in his power to single-handedly ruin his teammates’ premature offseason plans, as Maxey went off for 46 points on 17-of-30 (56.7%) from the field and 7-of-12 (58.3%) from 3-point range to lift the Sixers to victory in Game 5, with 17 of those points coming in the fourth quarter on 6-of-7 shooting, while the rest of his teammates shot 5-of-11 (45%) in the final 12 minutes of regulation.

To be fair, Tobias Harris and Kelly Oubre also had serviceable performances in Game 5 for Philadelphia. Harris had 19 points 7-of-11 (64%) from the field, while Oubre had 14 points on 6-of-13 (46%). However, the Sixers pretty much played as bad as they possibly could aside from those three guys, and still managed to escape with a win at MSG in Game 5 – which, quite frankly, should’ve been their second road win of the series.

According to the NBA Officiating Last Two Minute Report, Maxey was officially deemed to be fouled twice in the closing seconds of the Knicks’ Game 2 victory – which, in theory, should’ve given the Sixers a pair of free throws to extend their lead to four with less than 20 seconds on the clock to seal the game. But instead, the Knicks got away with the blatant mugging and drilled a 3-pointer in the final seconds to steal the win, which wrongfully stands as the only difference between a one-game lead for the Knicks versus a one-game lead for the Sixers entering Game 6 in Philly on Thursday.

It’s truly a shame the referees got in the way of the Sixers stealing Game 2 in the Big Apple. This has been an excellent series between a pair of really evenly matched teams. But, Philadelphia has been the slightly better team in this series at both ends of the floor, with the Sixers currently boasting an edge in both offensive rating (115.5) and defensive rating (115.1) through five games. Unfortunately, however, they still need to win two more in order to advance from a series that they deserve to have a 1-game lead in.

This series has been an all-out battle from start to finish, and the Sixers basically had a near-death experience in Game 5. They trailed by six points with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and all hope appeared to be lost before Maxey decided to single-handedly drag them to the finish line on one of his teammates’ worst nights. I think we’ll see the rest of the Sixers’ lineup feed off the momentum built in the closing moments of their most recent outing and respond with another win at home in Game 6.
