NBA: Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers Preview, Prediction

City rivals square off on Tuesday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Pacific division. The Los Angeles Clippers (28-21) will host the Los Angeles Lakers (28-19) at 10 p.m. (ET) from the Intuit Dome.

This is the first game for the Lakers since the blockbuster deal to acquire Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis as part of the overall trade.

Doncic is still out while dealing with a calf injury. There’s the possibility the 25-year-old superstar will make his Lakers debut next week, according to reports.

The 31-year-old Davis is a 10-time All-Star and helped guide the Lakers to an NBA championship in 2020.

The Lakers have won four of their last five games. Most recently, the Lakers beat the host New York Knicks 128-112 on Feb. 1. LeBron James notched his 10th triple-double of the season with 33 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds.

The 40-year-old James continues to defy Father Time, averaging 24.0 points, 9.1 assists, and 7.6 rebounds. James earned his 21st All-Star appearance as the fans voted him as a Western Conference starter.

The Clippers are coming off a 115-108 loss at the Toronto Raptors on Feb. 2. James Harden finished with 25 points and seven assists in the defeat.

Norman Powell is having a breakout campaign in his 10th season, leading the Clippers in points (24.1) while shooting 43.6 percent from the 3-point line. Yet, Harden (21.6 points, 8.4 assists)  was the lone All-Star selected for the Clippers this season.

Two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard made his season debut on Jan. 4. In 11 games this season, he’s averaging 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals.

The Clippers are having an excellent season on defense, holding opponents to 107.2 points, third-fewest in the NBA.

With Davis dealt away, the Clippers will have less resistance to contend with for rebounds. Clippers center Ivica Zubac (12.7)  is fourth in the league in rebounds. Overall, the Lakers average the third-fewest rebounds per game (41.4).

The Lakers also have to be mindful with ballhandling since the Clippers are third in steals (9.6).

The Clippers beat the visiting Lakers 116-102 on Jan. 19 behind 22 points from Powell.

The Clippers are 8.5-point favorites, and the total is set for 221 at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s -340 for the Clippers and +270 for the Lakers.

The Lakers will still be finding their footing in the wake of the massive trade. The Clippers will cover and cruise to an easy victory.

PICK: Clippers -8.5
